WORLD: Gypsy, ROCK: 60's Rock
Details:
Walking Wounded are a 5 piece band from East London playing a wide variety of original material from Rock to Arabic, Reggae to Balkan, Celtic to Ska and moreâ¦
They feature accordion, guitar, harmonica, bass, percussion and harmony vocals and guest violin.
Despite their eclecticism the Wounded retain their distinctive sound that makes them instantly recognisable and the band rock with an energy that many an electric band would envy.
The band were one of the winners of the 2004 Glastonbury Festival unsigned bands competition, Jazz/World section, and one of The Guardianâs âBest of the restâ at Glastonbury 2004.
**** [four star] review of the It;s Just The Way It is album in 'Rock'n'Reel' magazine (Vol 2 No 4 July/August 2007)
"Who was it said that if you keep doing something for long enough, you're bound to be fashionable again some time? They might well have been talking about Walking Wounded. And mention of Gypsy Punk being the next big thing has really let the genie out of the bottle, for they pretty much wrote the book on it.
Bult around the stirringly poetic songs of frontman Hugh Poulton, if ever the term potpourri can legitimately be used in an album review, then it has to refer to Hackney's Wounded. As with the majority of their albums, the band drag in loose stands from all the world's musics, be it eastern European accordion and fiddle or Chicago blues harmonica and slide guitar. These are then woven into joyous tapestries, be they simple celebrations of life, heartbreaking ballads, or intense grooves.
But music isn't always enough, however, and the Wounded have never been shy of casting a cynical eye on society's wrongs, in this case on the rousing 'The Devil Went To Tesco'. Telling it like it is, and not for the first time, this is a very welcome return for the Hackney heroes. Every summer festival should have one!"
