ROCK: Garage Rock, SPOKEN WORD: With Music
Details:
I am a Los Angeles-based performance poet. I have presented my poems laced with old spanish language ballads since the late 90's and called it Poetic Interludes. My mom sang a lot and the old songs she sang just come up out of no where, so I incorprated them when I performed Corazon still holds on to one of the ballad âtagsâ. Out of this came the desire to do a recording with music. But, Rock was the only style I considered when it came time to develope my work musically, since itâs the style I grew up with and which I felt most at home with, really! (That must be from growing up in Jersey) I love the radical contrast as I had been considered a sensuous poet...But, my inveterate nonconformist zeal (which of course makes me a conformist), and my love for the antithesis, won out. It was contrast I sought, to see what would emerge new and different. This resulted in the collaboration with the two-man rock-n-roll group, Barnacle. After much hair pulling, not always my own, we created: Carmen Vega: La Poeta Con Rock! Thomas Vaillancourt and I worked over a year just creating music to my poems and performing at local venues in L.A. My âlithmus- testâ came when we took us (Carmen Vega & Barnacle) out on the road. I thought if these completely new audiences like the work, I'll record it. And they did. After, Rhode Island and New York City, and by the magic of the universe, we found Bubonic Nate who agreed to record in his home/garage studio of No Exit Records in Lancaster. He tweeked his new equipment in exchange of recording our live sounds, and patiently dealt with my technical ignorance. Thanks Nate and Congratulations on taking your wedding vows with Julie.
I have worked without a budget! I donât have much money to give -yet! When I get paid after a gig, I share it or just give it to whomever seems neediest at the time...go figure! SO, I AM much indebted to everyone's input and this album is the culmination of pulling together some very talented people, who believed in it, including all who contributed to the art work! MUCH LUV.
As for me, I love LOVE, poets, writers, musicians; Millan Kundera, Joyce Carol Oats, I love Beck, Chris Cornel's voice, and Ditto's style, the sultry Billy Holliday, Bach and Bethoven. I dig the political ballads of Violeta Parra, once popular in the Americas. But the politics of the soul are the ones to protect and nurture. Peace within, yields a peaceful nation. I have done work in theatre and my solo" Spanish Ballads by the Sink" was nominated Best Production by the NOHO Valley Theatre League. Still, poetry is my passion and my poems can be found in various publications and anthologies including the Austin International Poetry Festival 2001 Anthology, the Southern Anthology, and the Onyx Spoken Word anthology and my bilingual book is titled REFLECTIONS FROM THE WELL. Email me directly: lapoetaconrock@yahoo.com, Also, check out the videos on YouTube under La Poeta CV and the short in collaboration with Jon Kinyon of poem: "DESERT SONG"on Myspace.com/lapoetacv. Thanks for stopping by, buy, bye! CIAO
