Details:
Dave Vitagliano has been singing since the time he could talk. He started playing bass guitar and guitar from age 12. At 19, Dave began going to open mike nights in Tempe, Arizona and soon met Tom Gibney and Walt Richardson. He formed a duo with Tom and sometimes they shared nights at Tempe locations such as the Varsity Inn during 1979 with Walt and his partner. In 1980 Tom left for California and Dave met Craig Hannay and Al Renzo. With Al playing acoustic rhythm, Craig on acoustic lead, and Dave on bass they formed the Hannay Brothers. Playing steadily at both the Lunt Ave Marble Club and Dooleys they became local favorites with tight 3 part harmonies. Later with Kevin Bennett on Drums, they formed Twist of Fate, doing a wide range of covers but specializing in Grateful Dead, CSN, and Neil Young. As Twist of Fate they played all the old Tempe venues; Tonys New Yorker, Edsels Attic, and Long Wongs, from the mid 80's through the early 90's. All this time Dave was writing songs from his experiences. After Twist of Fate faded, Dave began doing solo gigs in Coffee Houses playing both covers and his originals. Craig and Al always had open invitations to sit in any time they were available. In the Fall of 2004 Dave wanted to take the songs he had written and record them. He called on old friends Craig Hannay and Al Renzo to lend a hand. He also reconnected with an old high school friend guitarist, Tim McAnally, and asked him to play on the project. Kevin Bennett agreed to do drums. The only thing they lacked was a studio to record at. One night in May of 2005 Dave went to a club in Tempe, and by chance ran into old friend Walt Richardson. It was a great reunion and when conversation turned to recording, Walt suggested Norm Pratt. Dave had often gone to hear Norm play in the late 70s at the Warehouse in Tempe. With all the pieces in place Norm agreed to engineer the project in his studio, the Adobe. The project began in August of 2005 and wrap up post production in May of 2006. Daves CD, The Road Behind Me, is a retrospect of the events of his life. The songs and the inspirations for them, as well as the friends who played on it, are all essential parts of the last 25 years. Jackson Browne, Roger Clyne, The Refreshments, Jimmy Buffett, Toad the Wet Sprocket, Jerry Riopelle, The Grateful Dead, The Doobie Brothers, CSN, The Allman Brothers, and Marshall Tucker were major influences in Dave's writing. With a list such as that you can bet this disk has an interesting mix of styles. The completion of this project put in place for Dave, both closure and new beginnings.
