Soma and Its Sequelae is a collection of songs conceptually arranged around the basic premise of the male poet seeking visionary experiences.

Vision, when concentrated in the immediacy of the poetâs perception, materializes into a substance, called âSoma,â which then proceeds to flow through the poetâs body, enlivening him, giving him a glimpse of God, so that he is a source of love unto the world. I assure you, Soma is a real substance, identified by ancient seers, and called many things over the ages- the philosophers stone, the golden fleece, the nectar of immortality, etc.

This is not to say that these songs are hippy and happy. Happiness is not of issue here. What is of issue is the nature of perception, and the possibility of transformation and illumination.

The male poet in question engages his world through two primary foci- through his woman and through his god. Safe to say that all the songs here either are about the perceptual possibilities with regard to a woman or his god.

The creative process evolves out the musical composition and the lyrics together; they are intrinsically married. Then the more technical acts of finalizing composition, arrangements, and recording are done. Each of the songs, dealing with the aforementioned lyrical content, involve pretty complex instrumentation. Veena, the ancient Indian fretted instrument, is essential to the music, as well as piano and guitar. The grooves are all provided by electronica and turntablism. There is very little bass in this album because of the general historic dearth of bass in Indian music.
