Fred Haywood began playing the saxophone at the age of fourteen years old through the Junior High School music program in East St. Louis, IL. Since he was playing the saxophone, it was only natural to listen to Charlie Parker and John Coltrane. He didnât understand what he was listening to, but it was a start. It wasnât until later in college that he became interested in Jazz. He quickly found himself drawn to the music of Jazz musicians like Sonny Stitts, Cannonball Adderley, Groover Washington Jr. and David Sanborn.

Fredâs first recording was with the East St. Louis Lincoln High School Jazz & Concert band in 1981. He received his Bachelor of Science in Mass Communications and a minor in Jazz Studies from southern Illinois University, located in Edwardsville, IL. While attending college at SIU, he performed with various Jazz combos and Gospel Choirs.

In 1991, he performed with Dr. Bobby Jones Gospel Explosion Choir in Nashville, Tn. Fred also has performed with several local groups in the East St. Louis, IL. Area. In March 2006, Fred performed at the Southern Gospel Music Fanfair Talent Search, Chattanooga Tn. Recently, Fred performed on the News Channel 3 live at 9:00 (AM) Memphis Tn.
