"As an inspired song writer Fiona Kernaghan has a unique ability to write timeless songs across many musical genres. I am fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with Fiona. I especially enjoy her focus on lyrics and melody. Check Fiona's work out...she rocks!.."
ANDREW FARRISS, INXS
"To be able to open your heart and speak of something that you may have experienced or observed takes enormous courage. Fiona is a great songwriter and human spirit. I know that anyone who will take the time to listen to her will discover that for themselves."
TINA ARENA, Multi Platinum Recording Artist
"Fiona is one of Australia's best new singer songwriter's, with more potential than ten Lisa Loebs or Sheryl Crows."
BERNARD ZUEL, SYDNEY MORNING HERALD
Fiona is professional songwriter and a strikingly original artist in her own right. Having earned her stripes as a staff songwriter for the worlds biggest music publisher, she skillfully crafts commercial material for other artists - she has had over 100 songs cut world wide, written ten number 1 hit singles in her homeland of Australia and won numerous awards including APRA (ASCAP) Song Of The Year and Media Song Of The Year. Yet she performs her own material with undeniable originality, baring her soul with the candor of a classic singer songwriter. Her co-writing partners read like a who's who of the international music industry, including writer producer Andrew Farris (INXS), writer producer Kevin Savigar (Rod Stewart) and Aussie icon Ross Wilson (Daddy Cool/John Farnham).
Fiona wrote her first hit single when she was 18 years old. "I'll Be Gone", was co-written with her sister, Tania Kernaghan, and snared her sibling a major label record deal. The subsequent record, "December Moon", featured 9 more tracks written by Fiona, spawned numerous Number 1 songs and went on to sell Platinum. ABC/EMI soon asked Fiona to record an album for them, but this time it was to be a collection of her own pop/rock influenced singer songwriter material. Fiona's debut, "Cypress Grove", had music critics swooning. Bernard Zuel of Australia's pre eminent newspaper, The Sydney Morning Herald declared, "Fiona is one of Australia's best new singer songwriters, with more potential than ten Lisa Loebs or Sheryl Crows." The record earned her the respect of her peers, a faithful following and a finalist nomination at the Australian Recording Industry Awards (ARIA) in 1996 for Best New Australian Talent.
After sparking a bidding war amongst publishers, Fiona, now only 21, signed a world wide contract with Warner Chappell Music. Fiona recalls, "John Brommel was and still is a pillar of the Australian music industry and his company's confidence in me took my career to the next level. Their financial backing enabled me to write full time and work in Nashville, London, L.A and New York."
It was a natural progression for Fiona to move to the United States in 1997. She moved to Nashville, the 'songwriters Mecca'. As fate would have it she shared a house with Keith Urban's band mates and in her words, "learned from the best" in the process. "Keith and his band, The Ranch, had just signed with Capitol Records so I got to see first hand what it takes to get to that level and what it takes to build a fan base in the U.S." Fiona also lived in New York City for a while, keeping that individualistic and edgy element of her music thriving. "I loved playing the clubs in Manhattan and working with the people up there. They're so driven and they think globally. My roommate, Pamela Sue Mann and her husband, Gerry Leonard, exposed me to all kinds of eclectic music and helped me to keep growing."
In 1999, BMG artist, Mindy McCready cut one of Fiona's songs on her, "Im Not So Tough", CD. The record debuted at Number 16 on the Billboard Hot 100 country charts. Warner Chappell Nashville then encouraged Fiona to put down roots for a while and write full time for them as a staff songwriter. She was included as one of the hot new writers to watch on Warner's promotional CDs and headlined their writers showcase at the Castle Door. News traveled fast about Fionas performance. She inspired a standing ovation from fellow writers and a room full of infamously hard to impress music executives. She became an in demand demo singer for hit record producers like Shane Decker and Steve Bogard while cowriting regularly with hit writers including Marv Green, Jeff Stevens, Chris Waters and Vicki McGehee . However, working in the country music capital of the world showed no signs of narrowing Fiona's creative scope. She penned the theme song to the hit Australian TV series, "Outback Adventures", while major label artists in the United Kingdom, Australia, Sweden and Finland (in genres as diverse as pop, AAA, AC, country and rock) kept cutting Fiona's songs.
Intent on broadening her horizons yet again, 2002 saw Fiona relocate to the entertainment industry leviathan of Los Angeles to focus on writing for pop radio formats and film and television. The move inspired new songs like "City Of Angels", where in true Fiona style she pulls no punches and sings, "where would we be without the best of Mexico? Let Maria raise the kids, you go get your lipo..."
A career highlight followed in 2004 when multi platinum selling Sony artist, Tina Arena, included Fiona's song, "Take Me Apart", on her much anticipated, "Greatest Hits" CD. Tina had this to say about Fiona, "To be able to open your heart and speak of something that you may have experienced or observed takes enormous courage. Fiona is a great songwriter and human spirit. I know that anyone who will take the time to listen to her will discover that for themselves."
In February 2005 pioneering indie label, Red Rebel Music , released the compilation CD, "Feeling Fiona". Perhaps the first of its kind the record highlights the breadth of Fiona's growing catalogue. 12 well known and up and coming artists performed a previously unreleased song of Fiona's and the result is a compelling collection of material that spans the globe and skims effortlessly from folk and ambient rock and back to mainstream pop.
Tania (Fiona's country singing sister) released her 4th major release, "Higher Ground", in Novemeber 2005. This time Fiona wrote or co wrote all 11 songs on the record that recently rocketed into the Australian Energy Independent Top 10 charts, while the hit single, "Harley McTaggart", has crossed over to regional pop radio. Two years later the record shows no sign of slowing down- the latest single âLife Donât Get Much Better Than This" just spent 4 weeks at number 1.
Fiona now runs her own independent music publishing company and has just completed work on her own full length album, âShadow Wine and Truth Liliesâ (In stores October 15th through Red Rebel Music/MGM.) Her much anticipated follow up to "Cypress Grove" was recorded at home in Santa Barbara with her producer husband Daniel Kresco. The record creates rich sonic landscapes and draws on Fionaâs favorite influences including roots rock, blues, jazz and energetic pop/rock. Lyrically, the record is remarkably candid and reveals the naked truth about Fiona, the woman behind the songwriter. Limited edition autographed copies are available from www.fionakernaghan.com
