Details:
The music and playing of Jerry Kosak has been described as âSegovia playing the music of Robert Johnson, while thinking about Leo Kottke.â This seemingly unusual combination of players represents the incredible diversity that has become a hallmark of Kosakâs guitar playing.
Blues, classical, rock, and jazz styles have all been influential in producing a âgreat reflection of many different styles,â according to Kevin Barnes of KBEM radio. Through teaching and performing, Kosak has demonstrated not only a love of many styles of music, but also the ability to perform everything from Villa-Lobos to Mississippi Fred McDowell. This versatility has resulted in Artist Endorsements from National Resophonic Guitars of San Luis Obispo, CA and, most recently, Petros Guitars of Kaukauna WI.
The pathway of Kosakâs music has included formal study of the guitar as well as rock, jazz, and blues bands. He was awarded a Master of Music in Classical Guitar/Musicology and taught guitar and music history at Northern Arizona University. Currently, he is Chair of the Guitar Department at McNally-Smith College of Music, in St. Paul. Kosak was the first two-time winner of the Zeitgeist Eric Stokes Song Contest, receiving the award in 1999 and 2000. He has also received grants from The Jerome Foundation and MacPhail Center for Music.
Kosak has performed and toured throughout the US and Canada and has appeared along with Don Ross, Tommy Emmanuel, Bob Brozman, Andy McKee, Mike Dowling, Catfish Keith, Steve James, Peter Lang, and Pat Donohue.
