POP: Quirky, JAZZ: Jazz-Pop
Ugly is the new beautiful.
Bad is the new good.
Black is the new white and so on...
You can be sure that Linda is no rock chick wearing black in a dark alley taking herself far too seriously! Remember Doris Day? Dusty Springfield? The Andrew Sisters? Throw in a dollop of Rickie Lee Jones and a dash of Tori Amos and vvvoila! Linda Wood. Wholesome good fun mixed with poetic artistry.
Lindaâs pop style songs mix hip-hop, blues and jazz with very groovy music, great story-telling and a hint of characterisation. And a contemporary cabaret style performance, the product of her background in musical theatre as well as rock, soul and pop covers bands, has inspired such descriptions as âsilk to the eyes, ears and throat⦠the audience love her as she is warm, friendly and vocally wholesome â¦. A complete package.â (Iain McGuire, Artistic Director of Mad Cow Theatre Company)
DUEL by Linda Wood Sept 2007
Along with Linda's sassy style, this album features great vocal arrangements (a trademark of Linda's style) and interesting instrumentation
as well as excellent production values.
DUEL is a humorous and poignant expression
of the artistic struggle,
of the gender war for romantic conquest,
of internal conflict,
of the push of what is and the pull of what could be,
of the contest between truth and paradigm.
SYNOPSIS OF SONGS:
Track 1: Duel 4:52
With a hoppinâ bass riff this song conjures up visual images of âthe wild westâ with a bit more groove. Inspired by the âDavid and Goliathâ struggle that occurs at times between a paradigm and evident truth.
Track 2: Grandma Amoeba 3:33
Driving tribal and dance rhythms create a bed for a rich harmonic landscape of bass, tabla, piano, guitar, strings, neon and vocals in a history-meets-post-modern tongue in cheek reflection on an entrenched paradigm.
Track 3: Two Doors 4:20
A gently swinging acoustic number about a moment of choice.
Track 4: Get Out Of My Life 3:33
Struttinâ out the blues in the wisdom of experience and hindsight, shutting the door on that which proves false.
Track 5: Goodbye Perfectionist 2:34
A rather bouncy Santana style song that captures the âI donât care what you thinkâ attitude you just have to have to be an artist!
Track 6: Make Me An Offer 4:34
A truly inspired âeducational pieceâ when it comes to the art of wooing a woman. A swinging bluesy jazz number that gets your toes tapping.
Track 7: Something Better (A Great Story) 5:06
Another toe-tapping jazzy groove with a âstray catsâ style bass riff. A wry reflection on the quest for love.
Track 8: No Place 4:40
Lush vocal harmonies overlaying a reggai beat. But donât be fooled by the driving beat. Youâll be visiting around the world in this song about the call of âwonderlustâ and the comforts of home.
Track 9: Bittersweet 4:28
Who would have thought of using a tuba and a triangle? What sort of album is this anyway?
The unusual and interesting instrumentation and vocal arrangements match the âroad less traveledâ approach to life represented in this song.
Track 10: Iâd Rather Be 5:15
A passionate âSealesqueââ song to escape into another world to.
Track 11: Peter Pan 5:19
So many of us dream of flying and wake to frustrating reality. Other dreams and desires suffer the same fate. An ambient piece with some inspiring piano and guitar work.
In the last few years Linda has performed under her own name as well as moonlighting with a group called âThe Bettysâ performing covers for parties and corporate functions. As part of the âSanta Bettysâ, a Christmas incarnation of the group, Linda has performed on ABC state-wide radio singing an inventive accapella rendition of Ray Charlesâ arrangement of Jingle Bells for Scott Levi on the Central Coast of NSW.
Linda Wood has also lent her musical and theatrical talents in recent years to âLeader of the Packâ (Central Coast production), âDowntownâ (a musical tribute to the 60s pop scene in Britain) âStraight Up Rogueâ (a jazz revue) and âBack to the 80sâ.
In Septermber 2006 Linda worked in New York directing the vocals for âAngelsâ(see www.angelsthemusical.com or www.myspace.com/angelsthemusical), a new production staged at the Duke Theatre on 42nd Street at Time Square. Linda played a supporting character role for the recording of this production in Sydney (July 2006) as well as writing most of the vocal arrangements and conducting the studio ensemble.
Whether singing originals or covers, Linda has the gift of connecting her audience with each song and making it her own storyâ¦and theirs. Lindaâs fabulous voice and musical talents will give your ears a treat and take you to places that let your soul breathe and your spirit soar.
