1960's influenced instrumental rock with a modern edge featuring surf/garage guitar, Doors-ish organ and VU drums all propelled by driving bass.
11 MP3 Songs
ROCK: Surf Rock, ROCK: Retro-Rock
Details:
Susan and the SurfTones' sound is a unique blend of surf, '60's garage, and late '70's punk/new wave resulting in an innovative, retro yet modern, approach to instrumental rock and roll.
"Untitled #10" features six new originals, three tunes you never thought you'd hear an instro surf band cover, and remixes of two of the original tunes. These remixes were produced by Prince Elwood Strickland III. Some of you might know Elwood from his Palm Pictures CD release, "The Parlance of Our Time". The remixes take these tunes to a whole new level. "Untitled #10" is a digital-only release.
Over the years the band has evolved from a four piece mixed unit to a trio of women born during the Eisenhower administration.
Susan handles all guitar and bass work. She first picked up the guitar in 1964 after seeing The Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show. She's an old school player who uses no pedals, just her Stratocaster and Fender Princeton amp. S&ST's 2006 release "Fluid Drive" introduced Susan on bass.
She played all bass tracks on the 2007 limited CD release "There She Goes Again: S&ST Play the VU". Susan and her Fender P-bass are the foundation of "Untitled #10".
Her original tunes have secured her reputation as a solid and innovative writer.
A classically-trained composer and keyboardist, Marky A. Kelly began her musical career at the age of three at the Cleveland Institute of Music. Susan and the SurfTones is her first rock and roll band. Marky co-wrote two of the original tunes on "Untitled #10" with Susan and plays all her keyboard tracks on an authentic 1960's Gem organ. Marky also appears on S&ST releases "Night in Old Town" and "Fluid Drive".
Avory A. Gray started her life as a SurfTone as keyboardist on the 2002 OmOm Music (Italy) release "Wrap-Around". She shared keyboard duty with Marky on "Night in Old Town" and "Fluid Drive". Avory switched to drums on "There She Goes Again: S&ST Play the VU" and continues in that role on "Untitled #10". Her Moe Tucker approach to drumming complements the no-frills approach Susan takes to her music.
