With a family who shared an innate love of music, and the namesake of an influential French painter, Cézanne was brought into a life of melody and culture. Born on a California seaside and raised in Ashland, a small and liberal town in Southern Oregon, Cézanne grew up with an incomparable artistic apprenticeship. Cézanne concedes that âAshland was like Eden, boasting an abundance of music, art, theater, and freethinking societyâ. Demonstrating extraordinary musical abilities from an early age, she began singing at the tender age of four. As her talent quickly progressed while attending middle school, Cézanne began honing her songwriting and vocal abilities as well as joining a local band where she learned to play the flute, and occasionally dabbled on the piano and drums. By high school admission, Cézanne was eager to contribute to as many artistic outlets as possible. Vocal Jazz, Chamber Singers, Symphonic Orchestra, Concert Band, Concert Choir, Honors State Choir, various Drama productions, and dance classes in Modern, Jazz, and African Movement, occupied her time. Throughout her school career and as her voice matured, critics began likening Cézanne to the fusion of songstress Teena Marie, ingénue Fiona Apple, and the eloquent poetess Sade. Cézannes passion and intelligence was strongly evident in her writing, and people started taking interest. Upon graduation and with strong familial and community support, Cézanne left for Los Angeles to pursue her lifetime ambition - a musical career.
From the beginning, Cézannes luminous talent quickly distinguished her in the local circuit and her vocals were in demand by a variety of collegiate groups. Joining the prestigious Singcopation vocal Jazz Group in 1998, Cézanne set about to achieve. Working tirelessly to train her voice and her ear, Cézanne found inspiration in âbrilliant and ageless mentors including Joni Mitchell, Stevie Wonder, Bonnie Raitt, and Kurt Elling.â Harboring vocal diversity which stemmed from her âhippieâ upbringing, Cézanne found an early appreciation of folk, jazz, rock, and reggae, which later evolved into hip hop, soul, funk, and rhythm & blues.
With a relentless determination and a willingness to stretch her creative boundaries, Cézanne realized that the West Coast lacked something which she so desperately longed for. âMy heart was beating to a drum that wasnât present in L.A," Cézanne frankly admits about her desire to find musical soul. âYou learn fast in this business and once I knew where I wanted to go, I wasnât willing to let anyone taint that vibe.â
Where she wanted to go, was straight to the city of brotherly love. In Philadelphia to record her debut album in 2002, Cézanne âfell in love with the musicality and deep roots of the cityâ, realizing that she had finally found the missing link to her puzzle. Relocating in the fall of 2004, Cézanne now resides in South Philly and remains a constant presence on the local scene.
