Chris Paul started his musical apprenticeship early, teaching himself to play the Piano at 8 years old and, by the age of 18, playing live Saxophone and Keyboard while DJing alongside the likes of Pete Tong and Paul Oakenfold; âI worked every Friday with Pete Tong at Bogarts in North London between â83-â85, it was a really exciting time. In 1988 I did a gig alongside Paul (Oakenfold) at the Royal Albert Hall Black & White party. That was just as the Rave scene was really kicking off⦠I was in the right place at the right time!â So, having cut his teeth with some of todayâs Dance Music legends, Chris moved into promoting what were to become some of Londonâs most renowned events; âIn â89 I started doing Acid & Deep House nights at Camden Palace but it was in 1990 that the parties moved into their own. We changed the name and music policy and âOrangeâ was born. We packed 2,500 people into the venue every single Friday smacking out proper Ravinâ, Bleepinâ Hardcore.â The same year Chris even DJed at the Queen Motherâs 90th birthday party!

Not only was Chris fully immersed in the art of DJing heâd also been successfully producing his own music for years, first signing to Island Records in 1986 with the UK #1 Dance hit âExpansions â86â and over the coming decade signing tunes to Tommy Boy, EMI, Virgin and Polygram. The latter signing under his Isotronik guise led to Chris being invited to perform âDifferent Strokesâ a rave anthem of the time on BBC 1âs Top of the Pops. Meanwhile his Orange parties were commanding such a huge response it was necessary to expand the empire; âThe Orange rave became so big that I was doing Friday at Camden Palace, Saturdays at the Astoria, simultaneously promoting the Rocket in Holloway road and on Sunday mornings we did the Orange breakfast at Busbys 4am-12â explains Chris.

Over the course of his time as a promoter Chris Paul did hundreds of events (124 at the Rocket alone!) and although every one was a huge success, some had to be better than others. So what was the best Orange event? âThe Hippodrome events were always really goodâ¦â says Chris âevery Bank Holiday we did a biggie event in there, we did 25 overall. They became legendary; Skibbadee even put Orange at the Hippodrome in one of his rhymes! The best event by far was the Essex Raceway though. We had The Prodigy and Baby D live on stage to over 10,000 peopleâ. That certainly gives us an insight into why Chrisâ parties were so successful, he would make sure each event was a show to be proud of; âI never did a bad show, I always spent lots on sound and production. We used to put an 80k rig and 4 lasers in the Hippodrome and that was just the start... this is when I had people queuing for hours before the doors opened, the rave scene was truly a movement then and thereâs been nothing even close to that since, true loyalty from punters. 88 â 94 were the best years of our scene and I was right in the middle of it... sweet!!!â

As the hype of the Rave scene began to die down Chris Paul hooked up with Kiss 100, working as a Producer while DJing at their weekly roadshows. Then, in 1998, he made the move to LA where he hooked up with none other than original gangster rapper Ice T; âI met Ice through some rappers I was working with, heâd call me up and say âWe need a bassline, can you come up to the studioâ or whatever and it all went from there. I produced the Latin Frozz album at that studio in Hollywood Hills and now Iâm friends with Ice T and his family. Heâs a handy man to know, a true OG, he can seem intimidating as heâs a big guy but heâs a really cool catâ.

Meanwhile, as Chris was DJing by Royal appointment and hob nobbing with ganster rappers, Mia V was perfecting her own art; âI sang all the time as a kidâ says Mia, âI still sing all the time⦠it drives Chris mad! Back then, when I was a runt, my big brother let me listen to his music. He was big into House and thatâs all I sang along to, Masters at Work and stuff. When I was 13, I was in the Beverly Hills Children of the World Choir and we were invited to shoot a scene for the film Face Off, you know the one, where thereâs a choir singing and Nicolas Cage pinches a choir girlâs ass!â

What does one do once theyâve appeared in a major Hollywood film at the age of 13? Well, if youâre Mia V, you move to Mexico and become a professional singer; âBetween the ages of 15 and 20, I would sing covers in Jazz clubs and resorts in Cancun and Mexico City. Iâd sing in both Spanish and English and they were all top notch places.....hotels, private parties, jazz clubs! After 5 years of doing that I moved back to LA and began to sing at raves and regular clubs; Proper every Sunday, monthly at Muse and Iâd do other D&B events like Blue Beat, History and Respectâ

So how did Mia and Chris come to work together? Iâll let Mia explain; âOne night I was singing at a Drum & Bass event in the valley. All of a sudden this guy jumped over the DJ console and came up to me and said; âYour voice is great, you need to hook up with my mate Chris Paul heâs lookinâ for a vocalist to work with on a D&B and Trip Hop project.â The guy who jumped over the console was none other than MCMC whoâs living here in the US; heâs been mates with Chris for 15 years since the Orange parties! So I met up with Chris in May 2004, I arrived at his Beverly Hills studio late! I had locked my keys in my car⦠not a good first impression and he was not a happy chap. But I made him a cup of tea and he soon forgave me, we wrote a song called âEnoughâ that day and the rest is history.â

The keen eyes among you will have noticed that Mia mentioned a D&B and Downtempo/House project. Well, obviously, Under Construction is seeing the fruits of their Drum & Bass labours, but what about their other work? âWe have very successful signings underway with OM Recordsâ¦â divulges Mia; âThe OM Discovery Downtempo compilation⦠Trip hop and Downtempo tracks, theyâre available on iTunes and on the OM Lounge vol. 10, OM:Chilled, The Ultra Lounge; Succulent Chilled Beats compilation CDs. Coming soon Loteria Beats vol. 1 on Nacional Records. Release date will be October 23rd 2007.
To date Chris and I have written 68 songs and thereâs nothing like performing your own songs and having an audience react to that! My proudest moment was singing my own songs live with Chris and Fabio at Blue beat.â

With their forthcoming tunes on Under Construction, OM, Water Music Records, Nacional Records.... Chris plans for another possible Orange reunion party and a proper live show coming together, it looks like this pairing has a bright future... If their past is anything to go by another few years and theyâll have enough interesting banter to write their autobiographies! I for one am looking forward to it.

Mia V bio

Mia V, full name Mia Victoria was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. At 14 years of age she joined the Beverly Hills Children Choir and was featured performing in the beginning scene, with the choir, in the feature film " FACE OFF". She sang her first two jingles that were sold to the USA Network Channel. She then moved to Mexico at the age of 15. Here is where she started performing and singing regularly. By the time she was 18 she was singing and living in Cancun, Mexico. She sang in the Hotels,Jazz Clubs,Cancun Convention Center functions, and private parties for the rich, all thoughout the Mayan Riviera.

Already a professional and international singer, she came back to the USA at 21 yrs. of age to study voice at the Musicians Institute. She soon started singing at the local dnb clubs. 'Muse', 'Proper', 'Bluebeat' and 'Respect' with Chris Paul.

Now she has commited her full time to the studio with Chris Paul. Together, Her and Chris have built a little empire licensing their music to record labels & commercials. They have been featured in many downtempo compilations under the guise Stolen Identity
