Details:
This award winning singer/songwriter has been influenced by the deep south and all kinds of music and people. Doc Baker's voice is rich, haunting and refreshingly different and extremely UNIQUE.
Growing up in the Mississippi Delta gave him the opportunity to learn how to enjoy simple things in life and rural ways. It also gave him a picture of a cross section of humanity that has changed dramatically over his lifetime. His song Ol' Son describes the influence an old blind man had in changing his attitude about racism.
Hunting and fishing as a young boy is a way of life in the Delta. His father provided plenty of opportunities to foster these passions and Doc Baker developed a love for the outdoors and the creatures that inhabit it. There was always a dog, coon, turtle, owl, etc. on their place who needed tending to. Momma baker provided him with plenty of her own sage advice on how to be a wholesome person and read the bible and bathed him in the Christian belief. Doc Baker is "old school" and proud of it.
Hard work has always been a part of his life and his ancestors knew it as well as anyone. They cleared the hardwood bottoms that they bought with hand saws, mules and shovels and farmed the ground and eked out a living. Money does not impress them but a good vegetable garden does.
As a teen he became interested in livestock and the mystique of rodeo and competed through high school and attended the Jim Shoulder's rodeo school for bull riding in 1975. He developed an interest in breaking and training horses and earned a living through high school from it. Doc became very accomplished at team roping and left the rough stock to the real crazy cowboys.
He is married and has two children and two grand-dogs. Gus is the grand-dog on the back of the album cover. The leaf with Doc's initials is a story in itself. A former grand-puppy named Dutch Baker was staring into the heavens one day and Doc and his wife thought he had lost his senses. After what seemed forever a big sycamore leaf came floating down and Dutch jumped into the air, caught it, and proudly delivered it to Doc. Dutch died unexpectedly and the following fall a big leaf landed squarely on Doc's head and his wife said " that's Dutch saying hello".
He graduated from Mississippi State University with a doctorate in Veterinary medicine in 1990. Doc's love of music and need for expression led him to learn to play the guitar about 6 years ago.The songwriting followed approximately 4 years later. Learning on his own allowed him to develop his own style of music.
You won't find this brand of music anywhere else and you are sure to relate to the lyrics and love the melodies. The title SIMPLE THINGS accurately describes this material. One can feel the artist's heart and soul poured into every song.
