MAURITIAN SEGA SENSATION EMILIEN ANNOUNCES THE RELEASE OF TWO NEW RECORDS

Mixing world-beat rhythms with classic pop melodies, Nations and Roots offer a unique fusion with universal appeal.

EMILIEN, the Paris-based musical chameleon who made a splash with his 2004 debut record, Reves, has just released a pair of new records, one sung entirely in English and the other in Creole. Nations and Roots each offer a distinct take on Emilienâs signature blend of Mauritian Sega and classic pop songcraft, bringing the focus back to a World music driven by Sega rhythms and percolating with jazz and blues beats.

In addition to guitars, piano, bass and drums, EMILIENâs new arrangements are peppered with occasional flourishes on tabla, sitar, and trombone. The result is an intriguing amalgamation of sounds drawn from cultures around the world that coalesce in a new, unique sound â the EMILIEN sound.

This unique mix of cultural influences was informed by EMILIEN's nomadic life. Born on the island of Mauritius, a tropical island paradise in the Indian Ocean, EMILIEN grew up listening not only to the Sega music for which this region is famous, but also to the classic pop songcrafters such as The Beatles, Stevie Wonder, and Elton John.

At the same time that he was developing his music skills and crafting his own style, EMILIEN was traveling the world while earning a doctorate in Psychology from Liege University in Belgium and a Master in Clinical Pharmacology from Glasgow in Scotland. "My life Europe and travels to countries such as the U.S. and India definitely helped shape my musical style. I am a chameleon in my musical influences. So it's not surprising that you can hear these various cultural influences on the albums," reflects EMILIEN.

Originally planned as a double album, Nations and Roots were eventually separated into two releases with two different languages. The lyrics of Roots are sung entirely in English, while the lyrics of Nations are sung entirely in Creole, the native language of the island of Mauritius. "The goal for Nations was to bring a western influence to the native Mauritian music while delivering the lyrical message in Creole," explains EMILIEN. "The goal for Roots, on the other hand, was to introduce the sound of The Sega to the pop audience." Though they might sound like vastly different albums, the songs for both Nations and Roots were written and recorded at the same time with the same band.

The Sega is a high-spirited folkloric dance unique to Mauritius that incorporates different African cultures. Because EMILIEN's touring band includes Sega dancers, his live performances capture the joy and energy of the culture that has inspired the songwriter since he was a child. Starting in December 2007, EMILIEN and his band will be touring through France and Mauritius in celebration of his two new releases.
