Details:
The Faux Frenchmen have played Hot Club of France-inspired gypsy jazz in and around Cincinnati since September 2002. Their first and eponymous CD release, produced by band guitarist Brian Lovely, is an eclectic collection of Hot Club-inspired versions of jazz gems from the thirties (Duke Ellingtonâs âThe Jeep is Jumpinâ,â âRockinâ in Rhythmâ and âCaravanâ), cartoon music (Raymond Scottâs âPowerhouseâ and the Theme from the Spiderman cartoon series), unlikely pop renditions (Brian Wilsonâs âGod Only Knowsâ), and an original composition, Lovelyâs âHang Time.â
Guitarist Django Reinhardt and violin virtuoso Stephane Grappelli lead the Hot Club of France from 1934 to 1939, blending traditional gypsy and European popular music with the sounds of American artists like Ellington, Fats Waller and Louis Armstrong to lead the first and most influential generation of European jazz musicians. The Faux Frenchmen take the Hot Clubâs instrumentation and style and adapt it to their own musical tastes and talents.
The Faux Frenchmen are acoustic bassist Don Aren, guitarists George Cunningham and Brian Lovely, and violinist Paul Patterson. Twice nominated for the Cincinnati Entertainment Award in the âBest Jazzâ category, they have headlined at Xavier Universityâs âMasters of Swingâ Concert series, the Little Chicago Jazz Society concert series, and performed at Tallstacks, the Jazz at Chautauqua Festival in New York, and numerous other concert venues and events. They have been in residence Mondays at Tinkâs Café in Clifton since 2002.
