My name is Doug and I want to welcome you to this place. I love the fact that you are here and I hope you can catch some engagements with the band I play with. The name of the band is Foley Road. We like to say, "Where ever the Road takes us!"
I thought this album was a real indication of our history as a band. As you listen to it, keep in mind that it covers the history our artistry over the span of a year. It is a record of our development from the summer of 2006 to the summer of 2007. Fred, Ann and myself began. Jill, our vocalist, came next and then Teresa, our flutist. You can hear the differences as we grow and mature.
This is still a work in progress, but I hope you like what we have done and I hope to hear from you. I like to think you will be hearing from us pretty soon. I thought that you might want to know more about us. Below are some of the bios of some of the members of the band in their own words. I think you will find we are just normal people who love the music we play and love playing together for people who love music. Enjoy them and other bios will be coming as the other members get them in.
WHEREEVER THE ROAD TAKES US!
Fred Erdmann
I play violin for the Cincinnati Metropolitan Orchestra when I am not working, fishing, scuba diving or engaged in other forms of outdoor recreation. I have come to appreciate being part of a smaller group and greatly enjoy the company of the other Foley Road musicians. Finding ways to compliment the musicianship of everyone involved is a labor of love. I like to play the âsecond dulcimerâ line with my mandolin, or sometimes just carry the lead. However, I am usually found on rhythm guitar, be it acoustic or electric. I can also slip in a little harmonica or penny whistle, when called to duty.
I am an engineering consultant when not engaged in music. Originally from Connecticut, I have lived in Cincinnati since 1971 and has become hopelessly addicted to Skyline Chili and Graeterâs Ice Cream. I still weep from loosing local brands like Hudepohl Gold, and recall the days when Newport was the place to go for a little naughty fun.
Ann Myers
Music's been a part of my life forever. My parents always had music playing in the house and in the car, and as a family we went to a lot of folk music festivals. When I was 9, I was allowed to pick an instrument to learn how to play, and I chose the hammered dulcimer. I loved it until I hit adolescence, when I got tired of playing such an unusual instrument. The dulcimer went in the closetâliterally and figurativelyâand I learned to play the flute like so many other high school girls. It wasn't until my first year as a teacher at Roberts Paideia Academy that another teacher (Doug Sawan) found out I played the hammered dulcimer and coaxed me into dusting it off and jamming with him. Now that we've been playing seriously for several years, I decided I'd earned the right to a new toy...and so I recently purchased a brand new Webster chromatic dulcimer. It has a beautiful, rich sound. I am now--officially--a LOUD and proud dulcimer player.
Doug Sawan
I came to writing music late in life. I was one of those musical procrastinators who wanted to play, but kept putting it off. The first song that moved my soul was by Franki Valley and The Four Seasons. (I'm aging myself now!!) Name of the song was "Ragdoll". I would surf the radio trying to find that song. Ever since then, I knew I would learn to play and write songs that I believed could move the soul.
I finally began in 1990 after travelling those pathways in life that make you ask: "What am I DOING here?" I sold an AK47 (don't worry,-it was legal) that I picked up somewhere for my first CD player and cash and bought an old metal-necked Ovation and a Hal Leonard teach yourself guitar book.
I started writing songs and putting bands together . The music you hear is what i have done. There are more in the works as I have grown in knowledge and sophistication. I hope you like what I have done and look foward to what I will keep doing. After all, it IS a pathway!
