In the early 1980s when I was studying popular song writing in San Francisco, I co-wrote a little Christmas revue of original songs and skits with Dennis Goza, celebrating Christmas in the snow-less city. During several Christmas seasons, we performed the Review, primarily as a community service for local retirement homes.

In 1983, Wesla Whitfield, now well-known as a jazz and cabaret performer became acquainted with the songs from the Review and decided to record four of them. Her performance of the title song, âNever a White Christmasâ won first prize in a local Christmas song contest, was praised in the Press, featured on radio and television, and spawned other performances by Bay Area choirs and soloists.

Two other fine performers, Joyce Luis and Shirley Falkner also recorded songs from the Review though their recordings were never commercially released.

âNever a White Christmas,â a tribute to the holiday spirit in the snow-less city, is featured in performances by both Whitfield and Luis.

âLittle Babe,â a gentle prayer for spiritual rebirth is sensitively performed by Whitfield.

âMake Everyday a Christmas,â a Broadway style blockbuster, also is provided in versions by Whitfield and Luis.

âLight Up the Christmas Tree,â an infectious childrenâs song is performed as a duet by Whitfield with herself.

Finally, âLetâs Give Thanks,â a song of thanksgiving is performed by Shirley Falkner and celebrates those things that we all can be thankful for.

The over twenty-year old recordings provided for download were taken from the original vinyl and cassette copies and in some instances lack the pristine noise free quality of contemporary CDs.
