Details:
Gilles Apap and the Sinfonia Varsovia were first brought together by Lord Yehudi Menuhin, who was the music director of the orchestra from 1985-1989. In March of 1999, Menuhin and the orchestra were about to start work on a project to film some of the great works for the violin as performed by young violinists of the day (especially unique interpreters) Gilles Apap's Mozart Concerto in G was to be the first performance in the series.
Sadly, only three days before filming was to begin, Menuhin passed away. As a tribute to this great violinist and conductor, the concert was filmed as planned, with Gilles leading the orchestra himself. The subsequent success of the film led to a series of concerts in Normandie, France, where a strong musical connection continued to grow. This recording is the fruit of that musical friendship.
"Hey.. Where's Mozart?" For people interested in what's happening in the third movement cadenza of Mozart... I was coming back from a tour and just goofing off with my fiddle, playing tunes. I started mixing in everything, the way I do in my practicing... going around the world in ten minutes. That led to playing around with the little Mozart tune, changing it into different styles. The result is what you are listening to on this album.
Needless to say, the reactions to this weren't always the most positive. I recall one man screaming "Hey.. Where's Mozart" I don't see anything particularly shocking or provocative in what I'm doing. It's just the natural way for me to play - Gilles Apap
His secret? I just do everything naturally. There's a surf side to life. He pauses, and, for emphasis, adds the mantra, "Surf's up!" He breaks into his infectious laugh, cutting the image of a very serious musician who understands the lightness of being and the healing power of a wink.
