Details:
The arrival of 'Everlasting Road' is a long awaited one. Leslie poetically, melodically, brings her undeniable charisma - steamy and quirky, angelic and gritty - ever present in each moment of weaving her breath and tone on an alt pop, soulfully alluring ride.
Marking the first Independent Release for both Leslie and her label Tiny Violet Records, 'Everlasting Road' is painted with a range of influences. You might say Aimee Mann met Crowded House or Moby met Norah Jones at least once on this album...maybe the Beatles met them all. Whatever you want to call it... she connects the range of influence by her unmistakable voice, front and center.
The title track "Everlasting Road" is one of those gems that's hard to imagine anyone else singing. But the beauty of this track is complimented by the rough electro-groove edges in "The Other Side" , the powerful swinging vocal pop mantra of "Don't Let It Slip Away", the nearing alt. bluegrass feel in "Along For the Ride" and the alt rock flavor of "The Trial", to name a few. The collection moves, breathes, and flows together as a cohesive statement, with a refreshing sound that's never short on memorable melodies and honest poetry.
Leslie teamed up with her long time collaborator Australia native Chris Pelcer, and recorded the 11 tracks in Chris' studio in Nashville, Tennessee. A no-frills approach, vocals recorded in the living room with Peedee the cat and the occasional break for a train passing by or lawns being mowed. An extreme contrast to the recording process of Leslie's Atlantic Debut album "Different For Girls" which involved many studios, musicians, producers, mixers, and locations, Everlasting Road's credits humbly fit on one hand.
Leslie says:
"My first album was more of an unusual experience than the norm for recording with so many places and people involved. I decided that I wanted to keep it to just a few people this time, but Chris and I didn't plan originally on it just being us entirely. Chris would lay down the parts and they were great so why change them. I'm a huge fan of his guitar playing..he has such a warm feel and energy. His musicianship is brilliant. We wrote nearly all of the songs together, and it's gratifying to release an album that is just our take on it."
Originally from Ft. Mitchell, Kentucky, Leslie got her start in the New York based rock band To The Moon Alice (A&M) before moving to Nashville to begin her solo career. After writing a group of songs for her project, Leslie also co-wrote the single "Just Like Love" for Peter Cetera, and was the first writer signed to Paul McCartney's publishing company MPL's new pop division from 2001-2003 (no relation to Heather Mills). She received an Emmy Nomination in 2002, and started getting her songs into film and soundtracks (What A Girl Wants, White Oleander) while recording with Atlantic Records.
She continued writing for films and television after leaving Atlantic in 2004, and recent credits include Gray Matters (2007), Las Vegas, Just My Luck (performed by Chantal Kreviazuk), MyScene Goes Hollywood, Everything You Want, and the upcoming film Live! (Eva Mendes 2007) among others.
Leslie Mills' story is just beginning to unfold. Everlasting Road will leave you with a wonderful curiousity of what will be next for this talent, along with a genuine feeling that you are part of it.
