Mostep started out as an experiment in 2005. Guitarist Jonathan Albalak and drummer Aviv Cohen, who have been playing together since their youth, were looking for an alternative to the conventional platform of jazz. The idea was to combine the jazz approach of improvisation and real time communication with other styles and elements such as electronica, minimalism, avant-garde and rock, while stretching the boundaries between these styles to create a unique sound. Soon after the idea was conceived the first Monstep gig took place in Jerusalem. The band got very positive feedbacks and showed great potential. A week later Monstep entered the yellow submarine recording studio, along with former members Yoav Ilan on keyboards, Gilad Abro on Bass and D.J Markey funk, who brought elements from the world of hip-hop and funk.
Albalak then edited the recorded materials, adding layers and re-composing the pieces.
The result is "The What & The Why", an independently released album that consists of original compositions by Albalak and Cohen.
Monstep also play non-conventional arrangements to Israeli folk songs, children songs, and even classical pieces.
The group performs all over Israel and Collaborates with many talented musicians, among them singer and voice artist Marina Blumin, who can be heard on the album, trumpet player Itamar Borochov, Bass clarinet player Nitai Levi, Saxophone player Asaf Yuriya and singer-songwriter Noa Shemer.
