Mary Oberle Hubley is the homeschooling mother of seven children, including two children born in Korea. A musician and composer, she taught music in several Catholic schools on a volunteer basis for grades K-8 over a fifteen year period, also serving as Director of Music in their parish churches. In 1970 she wrote Gate of Heaven, the first hymn in her corpus of Catholic hymnody of the same name, presently consisting of forty subsequent hymns.
In the early âseventies, some of her hymns were published by The Liturgical Press in its missalette, Celebrating the Eucharist and its hardbound Book of Sacred Song. Due to editorial disagreement, Mrs. Hubley disassociated herself from that publishing avenue, subsequently establishing Nicholas-Maria Publishers.
Beginning in 1994 through 2004, Mrs. Hubley established and directed the Midwest Conference on Sacred Music in northeast Indiana, seeking to counteract the widespread confusion and misinformation regarding the Churchâs stated requirements regarding Church music. Dedicated to the âRestoration of the Sacred in Catholic Church Music,â the Midwest Conference on Sacred Music sponsored speakers including Bishop Fabian W. Bruskewitz (Lincoln), Bishop Thomas J. Paprocki (Chicago); Msgr. Richard J. Schuler (St. Paul, MN), Msgr. Charles N. Meter (Chicago); Rev. Dr. Robert A. Skeris (Sheboygan, WI), Father Eduard Perrone (Detroit, MI); Dr. Thomas Fleming (Ed., Chronicles, Rockford, Il.), Dr. E. Michael Jones (Ed., Fidelity and Culture Wars), Calvert Shenk (Dir. Sacred Music, Sacred Heart Archdiocesan Seminary, Detroit, MI) and others. An offshoot of the MCSM was The Cantus Project, of which Compline is due to be published by Ignatius Press.
Mrs. Hubleyâs commentaries regarding the malaise afflicting Church music in America, as well as practical suggestions regarding its betterment, have been published by various periodicals such as Sacred Music, Fidelity, Homiletic and Pastoral Review, and Culture Wars.
In April 2007 the Institute on Religious Life invited Mrs. Hubley to address its National Conference in Chicago, teaching to the 500 attendants Christ, our Only Way (based on the Acathist Hymn to the Holy Name of Jesus); Hymn to the Sacred Heart of Jesus (based on the Litany of the Sacred Heart of Jesus); and, from Redemptoris Mater, Mother of the Redeemer.
Current and recent musical works by Mary Oberle Hubley are recordings encompassing the total corpus of hymnody known as Gate of Heaven, Parts I, II and III. CDâs and cassettes are entitled Mary, Mother of the Eucharist; Hymn to Saint Joseph (Patron of the Universal Church); and Gate of Heaven.
Printed music in single hymncards as well as Accompaniment and Melody Editions are available through the Nicholas-Maria Publishers website at www.nicholasmaria.com, where reviews and samples may be accessed.
The most current composition engaging Mrs. Hubleyâs attention is a hymn in honor of Saint Elizabeth Seton and the Sisters of Charity upon Mother Setonâs 200th anniversary of arrival in Emmitsburg, Md. She continues her research toward a book entitled Singing a New Song: The Subversion of Post-Conciliar Catholic Church Music (1965-2005).
She is married to Murray W. Hubley, Jr., and they reside in Huntington, Indiana.
