Details:
The Ojai Valley Boys brought their lifetime musical backgrounds and love of guitars, horses and hats together in 2000 and have been delighting audiences ever since. When they arenât entertaining at private parties, fundraisers, civic functions or the atmospheric Zoeyâs (in Ventura), the âBoysâ spend their free time riding and working cattle in Ojaiâs beautiful Upper Valley, where they all live a scant ½ mile apart.
Their special blend of blues and western music never fails to delight diverse audiences â it is hard to find someone who doesnât instinctively sing along to the cowboy tunes they croon. When their voices harmonize and the guitar cries, it is easy to imagine the flicker of a campfire and the swishing tails of sleepy horses. The strong blues undercurrent imbues the music with a longing that enhances the well known lyrics.
They bring their love of music and love of the land together with delightful style, entertaining their audiences with both music and wit. So what if they get to their gigs in a car instead of on a horse?
After all, even modern cowboys have to sing.
John Bennett Perryâs singing career began with the Moonshiners and the Serendipity Singers in the 60âs, but after he was spotted by a New York theatrical agent on the Ed Sullivan Show, his focus shifted to acting. He performed both on and off Broadway before heading west (a cowboy at heart, even then) to make his mark on TV and movies.
Over the course of his career, he starred in the series 240-Robert, Paper Dolls and Everyday. Of his many movies, his favorite is Fools Rush In where he acted alongside his son Matthew. He is kidded most about his role as the Old Spice Man.
DeWayne Boccali performed with the folk group The Countrymen in the 60âs and 70âs, and his love of musical theatre led to him âtread the boardsâ in many productions in the Ventura and Santa Barbara area. He includes as highlights his roles in The Most Happy Fella (as Tony) and in The Unsinkable Molly Brown (as Johnny Brown).
He has also performed as a soloist with the Ventura County Symphony. When he's not singing, he's delighting diners at Boccali's Pizza & Pasta.
DeWayne was the mastermind behind the formation of the âBoysâ, and his original song âYou Can Count On Meâ is a mainstay for the group, but despite these
qualifications and his strong baritone, his main role
is often to be picked on by John & Bob.
Bob Jones is the lead guitar player and musical âhonchoâ of the group. He brings a strong blues influence to the group that pushes them beyond simple cowboy tunes. Bob is a well known blues guitarist along the coast, performing regularly at Boulevard Music, Zoeyâs and other venues in Southern California. He has produced two popular CDs and has been instrumental in producing the upcoming Ojai Valley Boys Live CD debut.
The Boys perform several of Bobâs original songs: Love at Last, All These Blues and The Way Things Used To Be, among others. Traditional blues renditions will never be lost as long as Bob plays them, but he does take heat from the other âBoysâ for being as serious as his music.
