Quick Step John recorded a three-song demo that quickly earned the attention of Clear Channel Talent Buyer, Geoff Gordon. With only two shows under their belt, Quick Step John performed at the 2,800 seat Electric Factory, in front of a sold-out crowd, opening for The Pat McGee Band. They impressed the booking agent and earned themselves the opening slot on the following night at New York City's Irving Plaza. From there, the ball starting rolling.
In just 18 months, the group supported Gavin DeGraw, Antigone Rising, Virginia Coalition, The Clarks, members of the Grateful Dead, Rusted Root, Mason Jennings and Angie Aparo. In 2003, when Maroon 5 was unable to open one night in Philadelphia, Gordon selected Quick Step John to support Matchbox 20 and Sugar Ray at the Wachovia Spectrum, in front of 15,000. They followed their Spectrum appearance with a live performance on NBC. In the summers of 2003 and 2004, the Philadelphia radio station WPLY 100.3 selected the band to perform at their annual "Feztival" at the Tweeter Center in Camden, New Jersey. The band appeared with national acts such as Beck, Audioslave, The Beastie Boys and The Strokes. Y100.3 Program Director, Dan Fein, calls the group, "One of the hardest working bands," he's come across.
The following year, Whitaker and Bagden decided to focus the majority of their efforts on writing and preparing for the release of their debut EP, "The Life In Our Years." Not wanting to lose momemtum or a single fan, the group continued to play regular shows, testing the new material and honing their live performance. During the recording process, the band appeared for a second time on NBC.
Their debut EP, "The Life In Our Years," showcases the growth of the band's songwriting and arranging skills. Recorded on a pair of Apple computers in Whitaker's living room and Bagden's bedroom "studio," the duo produced, engineered and mixed the entire project themselves. With the exception of the drums, they played every instrument on the record. Since the release of the EP, XM Satellite Radio selected the band out of 500+ weekly submissions from around the world and picked up two of the tracks, "Natural" and "With Only Me," for airplay on XMU, channel 43.
Taking classic themes like life, loss and love and twisting them just enough to make them unique and creative, Quick Step John continues to earn new fans across the board.
What they sound like: The songwriting styles of the Counting Crows and Ben Folds, combined with the biographical lyrics of Dashboard Confessional and Jimmy Eat World, mixed with the guitars and pianos from U2 and Coldplay
