Ras Igan is determined to uplift people with his music

One of Jamaicaâs rising reggae stars, Ras Igan a.k.a. Skippa is determined to uplift people with positive music. âI am the messenger with words of wisdom and the promotion of my culture,â Igan observed.

Born in Robins Bay, St. Mary, Jamaica W.I., Igan recently released his first album âMusic Alone Shall Live,â on the Dan Jam label in New York, USA. The nineteen-track CD is very popular on several radios stations in the New York and New Jersey area.

Recorded at Anchor Recording Studio in Kingston, Jamaica the album features the stamp of approval from some of reggae heavyweights. Veteran saxophonist Dean Fraser, lead guitarist Mitchum âKhanâ Chin, percussionist Bongo Herman and backing vocalists Rachelle, Carol and Nikki participated in the production.

Born Herbert Logan, Igan is very excited and positive about his new CD. âThis represents the culmination of a life long journey with the music and culture of Jamaica. It is also a reflection of my strong believe and commitment to Jah as the Almighty God. The album contains a variety of conscious and realistic issues, romance, equal rights and justice and points to a better way of live,â he elaborated.

Igan who listed the late Dennis Brown, Sam Cooke and Freddie McGregor as his most admired singers said he was very appreciative of the support from his colleagues in the music industry, his family and friends. He singled out veteran singer Leroy Sibbles and his father Sam for believing in his talent and creativity.

Iganâs singing career started when he was a teenager, however his first professional engagement started in 1981 with the release of âWhen Jah Come,â on the Black Lion label. This release propelled Iganâs popularity among the poor and the ghettos of Jamaica.

âDuring the past ten years my focus was on live performances as the singer of the former Mystic Few Band,â Igan recalled. He performed and entertained at several north coast hotels in Jamaica. He also described his journey with the band and the hotels as the foundation for his career and confidence as a professional entertainer. âThis was like a university for me to perform everyday to a live audience for sometimes over three hours,â he boasted.

With the sale of the album far exceeding expectations, Igan said the future looked very positive for his career. âThe feedback and responses from the industry and ordinary people are very encouraging,â he noted.
