Details:
The silky smooth vocal group, The VELONS, release their latest studio venture The Velons and their Divas.
The Velons and their Divas bring together for the first time on CD, The Velons and a selection of the most talented female voices of early R&B and Doo-Wop -- The Jewels, Baby Washington and The Clickettes.
This CD has a collection of early standards, and new songs written and arranged for each of these music trailblazers. From traditional Doo-Wop to love ballads, this CD offers something for anyone who enjoys vocal group harmony and lavish instrumentation. âHow Sentimental Can I Beâ (The Velons) pays tribute to an incredible vocal group from the golden age of Doo-Wop, Lillian Leach and The Mellows. âSugar Wooga Babyâ (The Jewels) written by Reese Palmer of The Marquees (The Marquees featured a young inspiring singer/musician named Marvin Gaye) takes you back to the 1960s when songs spoke of young love. The Jewels are âjewelsâ on this number. âIt Isnât Fairâ (Justine âBabyâ Washington) is a sultry torch song which features the soulful voice of Baby Washington. Today, Baby Washington still captures audiences. âDreams Come Trueâ (The Clickettes), a beautiful love song features the sexy lead voice of The Clickettesâ Barbara English.
A special track entitled âA Chance To Say Goodbyeâ (The Velons and Tony Berry) is a musical tribute in memory of Lawrence LaMont Berry âMontyâ, the son of The VELONS manager, Lawrence Berry, brother of The VELONS musical director, Tony Berry and a very special influence of The VELONS.
The VELONS are an incredibly talented vocal group who have been performing and recording for over 40 years. From Washington, DC, The VELONS continue to dazzle audiences with their blend of harmony, which recaptures the sounds and spirit of a time when love songs echoed in the hearts of the young and young at heart. Their polished vocals and use of âblowâ harmony have been compared to the legendary vocal groups, The Moonglows and The Flamingos. But The VELONS have a unique style of their own, which commands attention from audiences worldwide. They have been honored by the United Group Harmony Association (UGHA) with the Group of Year 2003 Award.
The VELONS current group consists of James "Buddy" Owens, Jimmy Falwell, Bobby Horn and Robert "Snobby" Brown.
The Jewels are considered âDCâs Doo-Wop Divas.â This powerhouse group of talented singers is Sandra Bears, Grace Ruffin and Margie Clarke. They have been making great music together since 1958. Their hit âOpportunityâ (on the Dimensions label owned by singer/songwriter Carol King) made the Billboard charts in 1964 where it remained for seven weeks. Protégés of R&B legend, Bo Diddley, The Jewels would gather in his Northeast Washington, DC home where they would record with a soon to be legend, Marvin Gaye and DCâs own balladeer, Billy Stewart (The Jewels backed Billy Stewart on âReap What You Sowâ). In 1965, The Jewels toured with the âGodfather of Soulâ James Brown as his background singers in the legendary James Brown Revue.
Justine âBabyâ Washington is considered one of the premiere rhythm and blues artists of the 1960s. Baby Washington holds 16 Billboard hits. Some of her major hits include âThe Timeâ, âThatâs How Heartaches Are Madeâ and âOnly Those In Loveâ. Her earthy vocals have delighted music lovers worldwide for five decades. English pop star, Dusty Springfield, cites Baby Washington as her all-time favorite.
The Clickettes, formed in 1958, is one of the most talented female groups to emerge from New York City during the golden days of Doo-Wop. The current group consists of members, Barbara English, Trudy McCartney Cunningham, Sylvia Hammond Akridge (all original members) and Carlene Sabb. The Clickettes recorded their first hit âLoverâs Prayerâ on the Dice label. The song, written by Barbara English, has recently been voted as one of The 25 Best Vocal Group Records by New York radio host, Felix Hernandez. In 1959, the group released âBecause of My Best Friendâ and âTo Be A Part of Youâ, which are still favorites among collectors and lovers of vocal group harmony.
