Details:
Growing up in the Midwest of the United States, Classical, Jazz, and New Age music could always be heard drifting from the speakers of Adam von Baronâs family stereos. As a teenager, he listened hungrily to his motherâs cassette tapes of Andreas Vollenweider the New Age harpist and his fatherâs Jazz records by Herbie Hancock, Bob James, and Sergio Mendez. Von Baron started playing drums a little later than most, at the age of fifteen but had already been beating on pots and pans and breakdancing for several years. Rhythm was in his blood.
von Baron spent three years studying music at both the University of Missouri at Kansas City and then at Berklee College of Music in Boston. He studied Classical, Jazz, and Brazilian music extensively, three styles of music that form the foundation for his music today. von Baron went on to attend the University of Washington in Seattle and complete his undergraduate studies in Cultural Anthropology instead of music because of life changing experiences during a three and a half month backpacking trip through Europe in the early nineties. von Baron has said of his adventure, âIt changed the way I thought about people and our planet forever. I discovered that even though our world may seem big, all of us are in fact connected no matter what language we speakâ
von Baron also traveled to Brazil where he learned about Brazilian percussion firsthand from musicians in Salvador, Bahia and experienced the beauty of Brazilâs spirit that comes from itâs people, music and dance. He recalls, âI remember seven year old children that could play drums better than me and some kids would even sit in the back of the bus singing and beating out rhythms to their favorite Samba Reggae bands on the seats, walls, windows and anything else they could find that sounded like a drum.â
In early 2000, von Baron moved to Honolulu, Hawaii and has enjoyed a very rewarding career in music performing and recording with local, national and international artists of many genres. Over the years, he has worked with artists and groups including the Honolulu Jazz Quartet, Shelly Berg, Don Ho, the Honolulu Symphony, Mihana Souza, Show Brazil and many others. After twenty enjoyable years of performing as a sideman, von Baron has released his first album of inspiring and refreshing music.
In his debut album, Pangaea, von Baron is drawing on musical influences from places around the world including Brazil, the U.S., Europe, Africa, and the Caribbean. This album makes for both an exhilarating and satisfying musical journey unifying New Age and World Music into a genre von Baron refers to as âWorld Age Musicâ. The album is filled with sounds that speak from the heart in the universal language we all understand, music. von Baron has one purpose in the creation of this album and that is to bring our world closer together through tolerance and understanding for a lasting peace not only in the world but also within ourselves.
