Details:
Zoidan is the electronic solo project of Irishman Daniel Jacobson. He has been interested in jazz and electronic music since the age of fifteen.
After finishing secondary school, Daniel studied jazz at Newpark Music Centre in Dublin from 1998 to 2002, gaining the benefits of studying composition with Ronan Guilfoyle and guitar with Hugh Buckley. During this time he attended School for Improvisational Musicâs summer course in NYC under an Arts Council grant, where he received instruction from Steve Coleman, Ravi Coltrance, Brad Shepik and David Gilmore among others.
In 2003 he began a 2 year Masters in Music and Media Technologies at Trinity College Dublin. His thesis piece, The Ten Paramis, was a composition for 9 musicians and live electronics. The electronics in this piece make use of a self-designed system for manipulating beat-loops and processing live signals (using the software Max/MSP), which allows the user to control the electronic rhythms and sounds, keeping them in time with other musicians, changing their time signature and creating live samples and loops. The electronic musician, in this case, becomes part of the ensemble, taking part in improvisation as well as reading from a score.
Daniel has been commissioned by contemporary jazz/eastern european folk group Yurodny, The Rise Saxophone Quartet, The Kai Big Band and the Improvised Music Company (for Intro 05). He was awarded Arts Council Bursaries in 2006 and 2007. He won a place at The Red Bull Music Academy, which took place in Melbourne, September 2006.
In 2006 he was awarded a Music Network Recording Grant to record an album of duets between himself on electronics and six Irish jazz musicians including Sean Carpio, Ronan Guilfoyle and Michael Buckley. His latest group, The ZoiD Ensemble (a tentet formed to play new electro-acoustic jazz compositions), are currently performing around Ireland.
He has been granted a Project award by the Arts Council to write a piece entitled âChamber of Death, Life and the Flow of Consciousnessâ which will be premiered in 2009.
