ROCK: Americana, FOLK: Modern Folk
Details:
"Nowhere", the second release from Austin based singer/songwriter Devon Heath, gives us a new prospective on Devon's music and songwriting, but the approach is nothing new to Heath. Unlike "These are the Reasons", the first release from Devon, "Nowhere" is a mostly acoustic record. I say mostly, only becuase of the electric fretless bass moaning beneath the plethora of acoustic guitars on most of the tracks.
This CD takes us back to the years before "Reasons", when Devon could be found at coffe bars and in garages banging on his acoustic guitar and belting out the vocals. We are reminded of the raw passion that takes control in such intimate and uninhibited performances. We are reminded of what it is about this artist that is so transcendent, so extraordinary. When I put on this CD, I can close my eyes and feel that unmistakable energy that is a Devon Heath performance.
Of course, Devon's lyrics are still the fabric of this recording. It is evident that he has matured both personally, and as a songwriter. The CD is both introspective and observational, and, as we've come to expect from Devon, it is very personal. When I listen to any given song on "Nowhere", I am sure I am feeling the same as Devon must have felt when he first penned the lyrics. That's the ultimate accomplishment for a songwriter, and, for me, the ultimate test for a song.
Devon has a way of conveying his feelings with his melodies and vocals that makes the absence of drums and electric guitars completely insignificant. In fact, for me and Devon Heath fans everywhere, this CD fully captures what this artist is all about. Nothing has been left out, it's all there. "Nowhere" satisfies.
