DPS(formerly the deadPoets) consists of MC's Jeff Moon and Chad Malik hailing from "The Queen City," Charlotte, NC. They have been making music as a collective since 1993 with a focus on creating hip-hop the only way they know how, honest and raw. It would be difficult to categorize them with just one style, underground, conscious, old school, etc. but their forte is without question telling stories and painting pictures with vivid verbal imagery. Essentially when you hear a DPS song you can close your eyes and the experience should be similar to going to see a movie, written and directed by them. This can be seen on their first E.P. release "Love Letters," which similar to the movie Memento moves in reverse order thematically chronicling the arc of everyday male/female relationships over the course of 8 tracks produced entirely by newcomer Buttaz. The E.P. examines everything from the initial euphoria (Date with Destiny) to infidelity (Young Missus pt. 1 & 2) failed reconciliation (Love Letters) to the dregs of domestic violence (F*cked up Now) until the story ends and the E.P. begins with the relationship nightmare of a woman calling the authorities (intro-911 Call). The hallmark of DPS' style is their ability to confront serious topics in a manner that is riveting and instantly relatable to the average person, but with an upbeat dexterous flow that often belies the gravity of the subject matter such as on the self-explanatory bonus song "Turnout." In case you were wondering DPS stands for Dirty Pretty Sh*t which represents the unique approach DPS brings to making music. Any fan of hip hop at it's best, with banging beats, tight flows, and thought provoking lyrics will enjoy DPS and their opus "Love Letters."
