Lenny Marcus hails from Washington, DC but worked for many years in New Orleans. He has studied, performed, and recorded with many jazz greats, including Ray Bryant, Alvin Batiste, Ellis Marsalis, David "Fathead" Newman, Jane Powell, Brian Lynch, Charlie Byrd, Herb Ellis, and many others. Lenny's compositions has received acclaim as well, and his song, "In the Middle of the Night," was a finalist in ISC's International Song Competition in 2005. Jazz Times magazine wrote of Lenny's CD, "Jazzaphrenia," which featured Frank Foster and Sonny Fortune, that "the way this group plays jazz is infectious!"
"Deeper, Still" is the 9th CD put out by the Lenny Marcus Trio, which features stellar guitarist Cyrus Pace on many of the tracks. Lenny writes, "this new project is a bit different than our past CD's, as there is much meditative and contemplative feeling in the compositions and the performance." The group can't help but swing on several tracks, as in Rhapsody in Blue, Wouldn't it be Loverly?, and Alvin Batiste's Little Star. However, the title track Deeper, Still, and Inner Journey, are deeply moving songs with beautiful interplay between grand piano and acoustic guitar. The CD opens with "Turn on the Stars," which sounds like a jazz classic upon the first listen. "Meditations in Time" is an ultra cool 5/4 song with a blues feel.
"Deeper, Still" shows off the deep feeling of Marcus's compositions, complimented by the beautiful guitar work of Cyrus Pace, the lyrical acoustic bass playing of Scott Trayer, with Larry Scott adding subtle textures on the drums.
