The Red Hot Chachkas, voted best klezmer band in the San Francisco Bay Area by the J in 2006 and best klezmer band AND best dance band this year, and featured this spring on KQED's program, "Spark", are excited to present their second recording, entitled, "Spice It Up"!

The Red Hot Chachkas have been delighting audiences in the Bay Area for over ten years with their delectable mix of traditional klezmer tunes and original compositions. Their music is inspired by the revival in the 1970's of the tradition of East European klezmer by groups like Klezmorim, and the fusion of this tradition with many other musical genres by groups including the Klezmatics, John Zorn, and the New Orleans Klezmer Experience, to name just a few.

"Spice It Up" is a natural evolution for the Chachkas from their first recording, Family Album. That recording grounded itself in traditional tunes and original compositions that aspired to continue that tradition, while venturing briefly into the improvisational realm. "Spice It Up" shows what five more years of playing, listening, and writing can do for a band; the Chachkas are stretching their wings every which way! Over half the recording's 18 tracks are original compositions, with hints of Irish, old-timey, avante-garde, and even rock and roll mixed in (to whit, the final cut, "Rocky Hora"), with generous dollops of improv throughout.
