In 1997, Bill Flaherty, an average liberal white-guy, was playing Magic the Gathering on his 486 IBM Compatible while listening to A Tribe Called Quests âLow End Theoryâ. A rainstorm of severe magnitude was occurring, and Billâs roof was unexpectedly struck with seven bolts of lightning. Volts of electricity surged through the wiring in his apartment, and exploded out of Billâs PC onto him⦠just when his Juggernaut with holy strength was about to attack unblocked and defeat the blue wizard en route to him saving Dominia.
As the electricity enveloped him, he was infused with the power of hip-hop, supra-human strength, psychic acumen, magical ability, and the will to wear sandals through 3/4 of the New England calendar year. As his body glowed, charged with power, he heard a voice...
"You have been chosen... you shall uplift hip-hop beyond the profit-driven, misogynistic, violent, unintelligent, warped style that the corporate music industry has enslaved it in... you shall return hip-hop to itâs true nature and bring enlightenment, intelligence, social justice, and originality back into the art form. It is your destiny... you were put on this Earth for this reason alone, to exist at this time, in this location... so that we, the spirits of hip-hop, could summon all of our energy to this place... 28 Altruism Lane."
"Um..." Bill said. "This is 7 Altruism Lane."
"Excuse me?"
"7... Itâs 7 Altruism Lane"
"Youâre kidding."
"No."
There was a lengthy pause.
"Well, then... it will have to be you. Youâre sure this is 7, not 28?"
"Yes."
"Man..."
And thusly, Bill began his journey to elevate hip-hop... and became Sophomore.
He had an Amiga. With four tracks, he began to create hip-hop. His Supra-human powers enabled him to infuse the magic of old school into each composition. He wrote, he absorbed knowledge, he performed in his living room... and each day was a step towards fulfilling the destiny of bringing hip-hop back to the days when lyrics and beats enlightened the world.
Time kept movin'... he got a new computer, and was able to make music which had more than four tracks. He became a father, and was inspired by the responsibility to bring forth the light of true hip-hop to make the world a better place not only for humanity, but for his child. He released EPâs, developed his skills and was makinâ his way... fulfilling his destiny.
A Sophomore continued on his journey... he was watched. Not only by those that wished him success, but by a group of individuals motivated by one goal: destroy Sophomore.
A collective born out of insanity, hate, jelousy, and greed... they were the League of Psychotic Obtuse Sadistic Evil Reprobate Soldiers, or League of P.O.S.E.R.S. The existence of Sophomore was an affront to them. They seethed at the indignity of living in a world where Sophomore had a website that was visited 20-40 times a day. Made physically ill by the fact that he finished an EP and sold about ten copies. Overcome by rage that Sophomore dared criticize capitalism, the United States, and popular culture. They formulated a plan to eliminate Sophomore.
They spread rumors, hacked into his computer, burglarized his apartment... and incrementally obliterated every aspect of his life. His reputation was demolished... friends and associates distanced themselves... his son was kept away... employment opportunities disappeared... and soon, Sophomore was alone.
The League of P.O.S.E.R.S. rejoiced! Sophomore abandoned his music and his website, and each day was consumed with trying to overcome obstacles that they would construct. For years, Sophomore was a pariah, and League of P.O.S.E.R.S. relentlessly created propaganda, made false statements in his name, and attacked them through their own dark magic and psychic powers. The League of P.O.S.E.R.S. confidently proclaimed that soon... Sophomore would be completely defeated.
But, Sophomoreâs defeat never occurred.
Humiliated, financially destitute, and with no social interaction... Sophomore called upon the abilities he was given, and transformed every setback into opportunity. As the years went on, members of the League of P.O.S.E.R.S. would attack him, and it was they who were defeated. Every plot devised to destroy him was countered. With every victory Sophomore would gain strength, and with every defeat the League of P.O.S.E.R.S. would diminish in their power. As Sophomore won battle after battle, it became clearer and clearer... he would fulfill his destiny.
And so... join Sophomore as he fights to clear his name, be reunited with his son, and to uplift hip-hop while battling the League of P.O.S.E.R.S. and their attempts to destroy him.
