Ask lead singer and guitarist Evan James what kind of music Nashville-based Dime Store Thieves plays, and all he says is "good," partly because Dime Store Thieves so diverse in their musical inclinations that they defy a single label. They aren't trying to ride the latest fad but strive to make music that retains a timeless quality. Take the effects-driven and power chord heavy "Average" and juxtapose it against the country-tinged "Breakin' Down" or the piano ballad "Snow Angel" and one instantaneously recognizes their versatility. Blending alternative with classic rock, grunge and Americana, Dime Store Thieves unveils influences ranging from Radiohead and Wilco to Neil Young and The Beatles. But their songs are held together by James' distinct voice and consistent structure with clear-cut, catchy choruses that make Dime Store Thieves' music unmistakable...and unforgettable.

One night and several mishaps with the law was all it took to get Dime Store Thieves together. While watching the 2004 SEC Championship Game between Tennessee and Auburn at a bar in Nashville, a fight erupted between lead singer Evan James and guitarist Mark Milazzo after what James alleges was a blown pass interference call by the referees. A bloody nose and ring indentation to the forehead later, James and Milazzo, then total strangers, were detained by bouncers, handed over to police and taken to the Davidson County Jail. While sitting in a detox holding cell, the pair became fast friends after learning of their love for guitar. Serendipitously, drummer Jimmie McEachern, who had moved to Nashville from Texas only three days prior to his arrest, happened to overhear their conversation and the group exchanged numbers and soon began practicing. Taking into account the criminal nature of their meeting, the band coined the name Dime Store Thieves after friends Holland and James recounted their days of youth and getting arrested stealing baseball cards from convenient stores, one of those being The Dime Store General.
