Details:
David Britten was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia and moved to Ottawa with his family at the age of 15. He became interested in singing, writing and performing in the early Sixties. He is better known today as a 60sâ survivor of the music industry as many of his counterparts have totally removed themselves from the music picture. Dave was with Capitol Records as an artist recording in Montreal, Toronto and Detroit. He also wrote for several Ottawa groups including The Esquires and Staccatos. He ventured to New York on many occasions as a writer, only to find the competition was overwhelming in terms of any possibility of becoming an overnight success in the industry. Feeling he had to establish a base, he moved to Nashville where he thought the music scene would be a little more laid back and thus be easier to pitch his material to producers and artists. However, he received a rude awakening as to what was expected of him as a writer. He paid his dues as a staff writer with Screen Gems Music developing his writing ability. On two occasions, he came close to getting major artists to record his songs.. i.e.: Glen Campbell and BJ Thomas. However, four years later, he returned to Toronto where he worked for Capitol Recordsâ Publishing Firm Beechwood Music. He then returned to Ottawa, went back to university and then joined the Dept of Foreign Affairs in 1972. He continued to write , record and perform over the years and finally decided to put many of his musical influences into a cd âtransitionâ which has been released across Canada with a possible Asian release.
David has a new cd "The Messengerâ released in late 2005. Also, a Halifax group (The Urban Surf Kings) released one of David's songs âMan From Adanoâ on March 27/2004.
Also a 2 hr CBC documentary is to be aired soon based on the Canadian music scene between 1961 and 1971. It is called "Before The Gold Rush" and it includes the first ever Canadian video by the Esquires "Man From Adano", which is one of David's compositions.
