Details:
Tehillah Jazz was formed in late 2005. The word Tehillah is a Hebrew word found in the old testament that is translated into the English word praise. Specifically it means a hymn of spontaneous praise, glorifying God in song. It is the groups desire to use a creative musical format to praise Godâs name and spread the good news.
We played the Reading Jazz Fest in March 2006 on the same bill with Kirk Whalum, a world renowned jazz saxophone player. It was the first time we had played publicly as a group. Many of the songs on our first CD come from the 2006 Jazz Fest. The other songs were recorded at Grace Fellowship in Shillington, Pennsylvania.
The original members of the group, Matthew Held, Doug Held, Jeff Held, Marc Ermold and Mike Zezenski are all from the area surrounding Reading, PA. Greg Spangler, from York, PA, was added to the group later in 2007.
Jeff Held, the vocalist for the group, plays keyboard and wrote all the songs on the CD. But, it is the creative endeavors of each of the members which enhance the songs. Doug Held plays a Fender Stratocaster and brings a mastery of the instrument to each song. Marc Ermold, the saxophone player, adds his creativity and embellishes each song with his sweet sound. Matthew Held plays a strong bass guitar and a Les Paul guitar. Matthew played both bass and electric guitar on the studio cuts; The Fog Rises Quickly, Who Do You Love?, and Brand New Day. Mike Zezenski, who plays percussion along with Greg Spangler, adds a unique style of playing in the songs. Mike plays drums on the live portion of the CD. Greg Spanger also plays percussion, and played on the studio recorded songs. He brings a hard edge to the Tehillah Jazz sound.
Although the basic musical theme of the recordings is jazz, some songs are rock and roll influenced. âWho Do You Love?â is a good example of the diversion. Then there are some songs which are more unique in nature, for example, âThe Fog Rises Quicklyâ, which are difficult to categorize.
