About upapipopapo
-upapipopapo is a meaningless word in itself. It was born during a conversation with upapipopapoâs brother, who was playing a Nintendo game: "My brother suddenly shouted "upapipopapo!" and I really liked thesound, even though it had no meaning."
-upappipopapo came across Motown music when he was 3 years old. His aunt used to listen to Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Four Tops, etc, near him and often drove with him on the back seat, listening to this music. Marvin Gaye is still one of his favorite singers. "I love Marvin because he has such a beautiful voice but at the same time, I feel very deep sadness in his heart. This beautiful confusion has appealed to me ever since."
-upapipopapo initially started taking photos to express himself, but soon realised his photos were always connected to music. "When I take photos, I'm always listening to music. The music seems to shape the kinds of things I will choose to photograph. One day, I really wanted certain sounds for my photos, and I thought "why don't I make them myself!"
-upapipopapo music is very unique in its spontaneous style. Its tunes and codes may be unstable and imperfect, but this does not happen by accident. "I'm not interested in perfect music. I like music that can be shared, I mean, space should be left for the listener to add something. I like demo music because it is still growing so there is still room for me to add my mood or whatever I âm feeling into it. I think music should be interactive and stimulating."
About ENDless END
The main thing about the music on ENDless END is its immediacy. upapipopapo describes many of the themes as super-ordinary reality, that they are sketched from the really real.
As such this approach shares much with the way punk sought to attach an emotional component to everyday experiences, only where that style was often noted for its angry energy, upapipopapoâs songs can channel the dreamy, drifty and reflective emotional content with as much vigour. Songs convey the joy of âI got a carâ or take you into the mind of upapipopapo at three years of age, shifting the balance from vocals to instrumentation as needed to carry the feel to the ears and the emotions.
ENDless END ties these ordinarynesses together into a whole that builds and releases tensions across the album, providing a little insight into the range of upapipopapoâs approach to the super-real.
Musically and stylistically upapipopapo reminds of the more nuanced approaches in late-punk styles, Wireâs âthree girl rumbaâ and âdot dashâ come to mind, along with some of the more basic tracks from Gang of Four and Magazine. There is also a hint of the same spirit taken in a different direction with attitude by bands such as Sonic Youth and in a more contemporary setting by The White Stripes.
In the end, ENDless END moves to the beat of its own drum, with a little upapipopapo thrown in to spice things up.
