In 1991, Butch Robins and Hay Holler Records formed a âstudio bandâ for the purpose of recording 43 (actually only 42 - one song was recorded twice in different keys) bluegrass gospel songs made popular by the first generation bands in the genre. In addition to Butch on banjo, the group consisted of several leading artists of the day: Dudley Connell, Larry Stephenson, David McLaughlin, Bill Lux, Blaine Sprouse, Ronnie Simpkins and Rob McCoury. These sessions resulted in the 2-CD set, The Bluegrass Band, âShine Hallelujah Shine,â Vol. 1 and
Vol. 2. These recordings have been described by critics and artists alike as the most important bluegrass gospel recordings released in the last 30 years.
