You're initiated into Marblebarrel with "DC3," a piece that, without anesthesia, quickly dissects the listener nerve by nerve only to leave them pinned at the dimples in time for a healing duet of frequency modulated operators. "Great Weekend" deftly shapes reverb awash in harmonics into progressions of melody and rhythmic gorgeousness, satisfying even the most jaded fans of IDM music. Once you thinks it's safe to keep going Doofogoblin takes you where very few other musicians today manage - inside. It's a surprisingly comforting place to be. Doofgoblin's influences are not easily pinned down. Assuming a submissive position-common comparisons ensue, such as Autechre or Aphex Twin. But it behooves us to dig deeper where Mr. Bungle, The Residents, Shellac, or Idiot Flesh are all suspect. Tracks like "End of January" and "Start of February" which are composed almost entirely of wintry sounds collected from the wood burning stove allude to electro-acoustic styles of Matmos or Oval. But the bottom line is that Marbelbarrel is the most unnatural sounding album ever accused of being inspired by nature
