The eclectic talents of artist Mark Harrell are brought to fruition on this fifth release from THREE THIRTEEN; INTERSPATIAL MAMBO. Although stylistically consistent with the previous Three Thirteen outings, a greater sense of adventure and propellant energy permeate this music. Having always considered himself foremost a drummer, the tracks on Interspatial Mambo highlight Harrell's skill on the kit, with programmed percussion playing a supporting role. In addition, solo performances on guitar and keyboard are featured. Each song utilizes a free, more spontaneous approach, giving the listener the feeling that they are hearing a live band, with multiple musicians jamming simultaneously. As always, however, everything Three Thirteen has produced is the product of one individual, working alone in a home studio.

Standout tracks include "1964", with its jazzy guitar chords, solo organ and smooth groove, strangely evocative of some other time. The two minute adventure of "The Universe Once More" features a relentless odd time drum pattern backing an equally unorthodox solo piano reaching towards a brief but satisfying conclusion. The CD finishes with the mini masterwork, "Arriving", incorporating all of Three Thirteen's strong points; moody solo acoustic themes, rich, flowing chords ascending to a vibrant finale, and outstanding drum work accompanied by a spirited organ solo.

As with previous Three Thirteen CD's, despite what initially seems to be a wide ranging blend of musical styles, when heard as a whole, as was the composerâs intent, the listener of Interspatial Mambo will move through a remarkably harmonious universe. A place that must be heard to be seen.
