Garageband.com's blunt description was simple, "It's Nirvana meets The White Stripes"
Earl Clifton And The Pin-Ups is a two-piece (Husband and Wife) âplug-in-and-playâ modern rock band with a nostalgic appeal. Much of their music has hints of punkified blues, some sixties pop, early nineties alternative, a little hard rock, a bit of folk, and modern day simplicity and fashion. Their music has been compared to many great bands like the Ramones, the BEATLES, the White Stripes, Hendrix, the New York Dolls, the Sex Pistols, the Black Keys, Kings of Leon and the Kinks!
"Cliff Meekins (Earl) along with his real life wife Erika Meekins (Betty Lynn) have produced an incredible album packed with everything from rock to punk, blues to folk, old school to modern styles. Whatever the style, you can bet it's got some sort of rock root buried in a four count! Green Sea Acres is a true old school rock and roll record, It's the way things use to be. This CD is one of the finest offerings of this upcoming band and at the top of my collection!"
- Bill Tanoe (Rock Stomp ezine)
The story behind Earl Clifton and The Pin-Ups is best told by Cliff Meekins himself,
Cliff a.k.a. Earl Clifton (house painter by trade) "I was on a job painting an empty town house over a long weekend when I first heard the White Stripes over my little radio in the corner. I thought rock somehow died in the mid nineties and decided to reserve myself for the next Nirvana and suddenly I find myself Inspired by the "Jack and Meg story" smitten by their brand of music, so much so I took my old guitar out of the closet and felt like playing again.
A few months passed and Mothers Day was coming up and I decided to see if my wife, Erika (Walgreen's Manager) would be interested in playing a snare drum along with me on an acoustic guitar. I figured it would just be for fun and on occasion you know, nothing serious... She said yes
I ended up saving and I bought the best snare drum I could afford to buy and before long, that lone snare drum was surrounded by a complete drum kit, we added each drum one piece at a time, first the bass drum then the toms, and finally the cymbals.
We kept jamming out and playing together and Erika was able to play just about every basic beat I showed her and with the drum kit now complete, I switched from my acoustic to my electric (Fender-Stratocaster)and bought cheap, used fender tube amp out of the local classifieds paper.
As we progressed I started writing simple two minute songs with basic structure (verse / chorus / repeat). I dusted off my old Fostex 8 track reel to reel I'd bought off eBay (years earlier) and hit the record button and we started our first recording sessions right in the living room (Now officially titled - Front Room Records)"
What's in a name? (Along comes Nikki)
"Nikki (a friend I made on a paint job) played bass guitar for some time with us in the early stages but went back to college to finish her degree. Before she left Erika and Nikki came up with "The Pin-Ups" for them and just tagged it on my stage name hence "Earl Clifton and The Pin-Ups" became our calling card. "Earl Clifton" is my real first and middle names switched around so instead of "Clifton Earl" it's "Earl Clifton" without the last name. "Betty" is a pet name I used to call Erika all the time so we thought that nick name should be her stage name cause it just seemed to fit. After Nikki left our friend Lindsay Rogers sat in on Bass guitar and keys for a while but eventually had to leave the band just before our Debut CD came out (2005 - Limited Edition Debut, now out of Print) We changed the name for a while to The RPG's (Role playing group) after Lindsay, but that name just didn't seem to fit, so we changed it back to Earl Clifton and The Pin-Ups". -Cliff M.
The duo are not only married they have two children and take a break from performing shows during the school year to give their kids the attention they need for school activities. They pick up performing throughout the start of the summer months opening for regional acts that come through the Tidewater area of Virginia.
