This CD, "JAZZ CONCERT", was recorded live and shows this "hard-driving" band at its best. All of the players are first class.They play 12 selections featuring all of the band members.Two spotlight pianist John Ulrich: St. Louis Blues and If Dreams come true. He is joined by bassist Gene Mayl and drummer Ken Hall.
Leader Gene Mayl has tour with his band since the early 50's. They have played engagements in 48 of the 50 states as well as many dates in Canada.
They were the first jazz group to tour Newfoundland in 1951 and the first jazz group to play above the arctic circle with concerts in Kotzebue and Prudoe Bay as part of their history-making eight and one-half week tour of Alaska in 1978.
They have recorded on 78's, 45's, lp's, 8 tracks and now cd's and dvd's
Mayl has operated the D.R.K. straight through except for brief tours and stays with the bands of Muggsy Spanier, Billy Maxted, Bob Scobey, Pee Wee Hunt and the Dukes of Dixieland. While in France in 1948-49 he worked with Claude Luter, Claude Bolling, Pierre Atlan, Pierre Merlin, Sidney Bechet and Don Byas. He is on 93 records in all, most with the D.R.K. but also with others including Wild Bill Davison, Max Kaminsky,George Brunis, John Eaton, Claude Hopkins, Eddie Bayard and others.
This CD features some fine players including cornetist Ernie
Carson, formerly with Turk Murphy, Castle Jazz Band and Pat Yankee's groups. John Ulrich, the pianist, has toured with Muggsy Spanier, Bobby Hackett, Phil Napoleon and others. Clarinetist Kim Cusack was originally with the Salty Dog Jazzband.
The D.R.K. was the first non-New Orleans band to play the annual New Orleans'Jazz Festival and worked on historic Bourbon Street.
The band settled in New York City in the fifties and worked the Famous Jimmy Ryan's, Child's Paramount and Central Plaza clubs. They were booked into the Central Plaza by comedian Billy Crystal's father, Jack. Their road tours were booked by Joe Glaser,Louis Armstrong manager.
