Details:
All the songs on this CD are by Puerto Rican composers. Rafael Hernandez is the best known and most prolific, with 3,000 musical works to his credit. His songs have been compared to those of Cole Porter. Myrta Silva's song "Que Sabes Tu" is reminiscent of the standard "You don't Know What Love Is." "Luna de Miel(Honey Moon)en Puerto Rico" was a hit by singer Bobby Capo in the Cha Cha Era.
"Caravan" was written by Juan Tizol who played trombone with Duke Ellington for many years. "Mis Amores" is a Danza, a musical form popular in Puerto Rico at the turn of the century. A very elegant dance is done to it. The Plena is also uniquely Puerto Rican, although it's roots are African. The title song, "En Mi Viejo San Juan" is one of the most nostalgic songs ever written, especially for Puerto Ricans residing off the Island. Sylva Rexach wrote hopelessly romantic love songs, like "TusPasos"."Calypso, Bomba y Plena" was recorded by Cortijo y su Combo, later to be known as El Gran Combo. "Simplemente una ilusion" was written by pianist Hecto Urdaneta.

Through the centuries Old San Juan has maintained it's charm and individuality. Nowadays the harbor is filled with cruise ships instead of Spanish galleons laded with gold. The narrow cobblestone streets that once felt the tread of Conquistador's boots are now lined with gift shops and artisans. But as walk among the ancient buildings and sentry towers you know that you are not in Kansas anymore.

From Puerto Rico with Love,
Don Baaska
