Haitiâs Emeline Michel Releases a New CD:
Reine De Coeur (Queen of Hearts)
« Emeline [Reine de Coeur], c'est du pâté chaud ..... De la même manière dont tout citoyen a une carte d'identification nationale, chaque Haïtien se doit d'avoir un CD d'Emeline chez lui. »
âEmeline [Reine de Coeur] is selling like hot cakes â¦. Just as every citizen has a national identity card, every Haitian should have one Emeline CD at their homeâ
Le Nouvelliste (Haiti) 12 Novembre 2007
Haitiâs singer/songwriter EMELINE MICHEL returns with her 9th release to date, Reine De Coeur (Queen of Hearts), her first album in 4 years.
Truly an international affair, Reine De Coeur was recorded in Haiti, New York, Montreal and Burkina Faso (French West Africa). "This album is a true reflection of lifeâs moments: love, hope, pain, passion, and faith. I wanted this album to be raw and real so that people from all over could relate. Much of the album was written in Africa and Haiti. Though these two lands are thousands of miles apart, the rhythms and melodies flow from the same place and serve as a backdrop to the musical stories being told.â
This is Emelineâs 4th album as a producer and she assembled an outstanding corps of 35 musicians who breathe an undeniable vitality into the tracks. The players include members of her touring band Makarios Cesaire and Dominic Kanza (from Congo) on guitar, bassist Adrien Legagneur, French pianist Frederic Las Fargeas, Carol Hodge from Anguilla on drums, and master Haitian percussionists Serge Decius and Daniel Brevil. Among the guest artists are renowned Serbian gypsy accordionist Lelo Niko, percussionist Emedin Rivera, Haitian troubadours Toto Laraque and Beethova Obas (on guitars), and Haitian-American violin virtuoso Daniel Bernard Roumain.
⢠The contagious sunny groove of the first song, Gade Papi, relates how aspirations and dreams can indeed come true. âThe song is there to encourage others but most importantly to remind us not to give power to those that lack faith in your dreams by giving up."
⢠Awa, sung with the wonderful young singer Awa Sissao of Burkina Faso, is a conversation between two strong women from different parts of the world, who share the same wry observations about men.
⢠Yon Ti Mo (One Little Word), a romantic duet with Daniel Beaubrun, founding member of Haitian roots bands Boukman Eksperyans and Lataye, is all about having a second chance at love.
⢠Mwen pa ka Lage'w speaks of eternal patriotism in the face of the inevitable negative portrayals of her homeland, Haiti.
⢠Fe Van Pou Mwen, co-written by Haitian poet Cyto Cave and singer/songwriter Boulot Valcourt, draws such an accurate portrayal of Port-au-Prince that you will feel as if you are walking through the âIron Marketâ.
And there are nine more tracks! Listen â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦ you wonât be disappointed.
