BREATHING UNDER WATER marks a big leap forward on my journey as a songwriter. With this album, I feel like I have come home, trusting and listening to my voice as an artist. The incredibly generous muscians who I had the pleasure of playing with, not only helped me hear my songs in a new way, but I could literally fall up, floating in their groove, enjoying the journey as much as the result. It was a beautiful thing and I am forever changed. Thanks guys!
Ronan Chris Murphy, producer, selected an amazing group of musicians, and even though they had never played together before, we all felt the magic from the moment we started recording the first song. Ronan scored 2 pre-amps that were used on Neil Youngâs âHarvestâ album. I flipped out with delight, and had to have them on thisrecord. âHarvestâ was one of those albums that showed up when I needed it most, and Neilâs influence bleeds into my music to this day. Humbly, I hope that Breathing Under Water will be someoneâs âHarvest.â
WHO'S WHO ON THE ALBUM (you'll be glad you asked...)
Ronan Chris Murphy is a Grammy nominated (Malaysia) record producer, music producer, studio mixer, guitar player based in Los Angeles. He works around the globe and some of his credits include King Crimson (several albums), Steve Morse (Dixie Dreggs, Deep Purple), Terry Bozzio (Zappa, Missing Persons),Steve Stevens (Billy Idol), Tony Levin (Peter Gabriel, John Lennon, Pink Floyd), Nels Cline (Wilco), Robert Fripp, Adrian Belew, as well as various projects featuring members of Tool, Ministry, Weezer, Dishwalla, and Yes. He also knows all the places to eat great food on the cheap.
G.E.Stinson, fallen new age luminary, is a Grammy winner and co-founder of the seminal fusion/world music group, Shadowfax. I kept saying âyes!â and he kept saying âreally?â and then would take it out even further. He also invented the famous âteradactyl guitarâ on âLost in the Chaos.â
Ian Sheridan is most commonly known as âthe guy who plays bass with Jason Mraz.â I learned how to live in his groove.
Victor Bisetti has performed around the world and has recorded several projects with the Los Angeles band Los Lobos. His discography is a mile long, and his groove is a mile deep.
John Wicks is a studio session drummer based in Los Angeles currently playing live with Money Mark of The Beastie Boys, Jessie Baylin, Skerik, punk band Soccermom, and The Good Listeners.
Stephen Marsh is a mastering engineer based in Los Angeles, CA. He has mastered two Grammy Award winning projects and multiple Gold And Platinum albums. Notable Credits: Neil Diamond, Keb Mo, B2K, Ginuwine.
I also want to thank Jay Terrien for some magical bass lines, Paula Heegaard who helped get me to this place, and to the wonderful John Mazzei, who loves and supports me everyday. Weâre in it for the long haul baby!
THE STORIES BEHIND THE SONGS:
BIG GIRLS DON'T CRY
Cold Iowa wintertime. Jack Frost had more than moved in. This song was written about my dad who took his life when I was 9. I was playing guitar and trying to write songs. At this point, I didnât really have a clue as to what effect his death would have on me. Thousands of dollars and years of therapy later, Iâm cool with the whole mess.
Warning: do not drive or operate heavy machinery while listening to âBig Girls Donât Cry.â
A MILLION STARS
Written on Christmas Eve. âEverybodyâs got a dream.â I remember that guy on the skateboard in the movie âPretty Woman.â I never made it to LA to test the big waters. These days stars are born everyday. Lives are full of regrets and lost opportunities. People are born into families that donât understand them. The rich get richer, the stars get brighter, and at the same time, the poor get poorer and the lights go out. I think that everyone has their dream, their wish upon a star. There was such an innocence to the melody and guitar. The gift to me is the belief that weâre all part of the big sky. Childlike and hopeful amongst the tears of bitter disappointment and resentment. I also would like to mention that the bible reference was in there as a real question. I have to believe that whatever we believe in is what works. Hybrid acoustic. Acoustic hybrid.
BAD LUCK BLACK CAT AND A LADDER
No poignant history on this one. Iâve never been one to have âgood luck.â I was never one of the lucky ones, you know. I never win at drawings or contests or raffles. This song was about a time when I was left alone in a Kansas apartment, no boyfriend, no nothing. I didnât even have the cat.
Written from and about my San Francisco point of view. Well, part of it. It actually goes back into my dancer days when I was in an abusive relationship. I felt scared, broken, battered on so many levels. What was I doing, why, and who was I really? Those were the pertinent questions I was asking myself. I drank a lot of rhine wine and jack daniels with diet coke. The fog part was San Fran inspired though. Same with the Carl Sanders poem where the fog rolls in on little cat feet.
John Wicks drums, Jay Terrien â bass, jean â acoustic guitar, synth, guitar synth, caspar solo (victor bisetti on percussion)
MY LITTLE CELL
This was definitely SF inspired, laced with my dramatic dancer days of crappy relationships for color. OK, that abusive relationship crept in as well, even though the bookcases were not actually knocked over. I did feel like a domino though â it was a heart thing more than anything. Why SF then? Well, I often wondered if things would work out and whether all my pondering, processing, and pursuing were doing any good, OR was I giving myself just enough rope to hang myself? Regardless, I felt isolated, yet oddly safe in the little cell.
BREATHING UNDER WATER
Ahh, a song about my mother. Left with 4 small children (after the Big Girls incident), she was drowning in grief and anger. A survivor, she learned how to breathe under water. And at this point, quite well I might add. Also, I think all of us have learned how to do it as well. Smallstone acoustic.
DRIVING OVER WATER
Itâs really a song about my relationship with the music business. Itâs kinda like that dysfunctional relationship that ya just canât seem to walk away from. But, we keep on driving. Not drowning.
REMEMBER ME/REMEMBER YOU
About one of my great friends, my maid of honor at my wedding, Claudia, who died of breast cancer at the age of 33. We used to joke that thatâs how old Jesus was when he died. She lived. And lived. And still lives.
TINSEL AND ROCKS
John and I were taking a road trip. One of our first. Still working out the kinks in our relationship, power struggle, battle of the creatives, we decided to write a song where we had to alternate lyrical lines. No one was allowed to edit the words. We then improvised in the studio and came up with the song in about 2 takes. And we still like it. And we still like each other. Thereâs a magic to both of them.
Inspired by the emptiness of beauty magazine images. What we see in those âbeautifulâ girls is unattainable and therefore, dangerous, since so many of us still believe at some level we can look like they do, or from a guys point of view, that women really look like that. John wicks drums, jean â loops, rcm guitars, victor - percussion
WHERE ARE YOU TONIGHT
About my first true love. I hung on to the idea that we were meant to be together, even after I sabotaged the relationship to such a point that getting back together would never be an option. It took about 12 years for me to resolve this one. Time flies when youâre all alone. And weâre back to the beginning.
LOST IN THE CHAOS
I felt like I was drowning, losing myself, getting lost in the chaos of ever beautiful san Francisco. Since there is never a snow day, or a day so hot you cantâ go outside cuz youâll burn holes in your sandals, there is no reason not to be working 24/7. I was lost in the world of songwriting classes, critiques, and competition. I lost myself. Teradacytyl guitar
Instrumental versionâ korn, nine inch nails
