In 2007, self-made producer Nhojj peaked at the #1 position on the Myspace Neo-Soul Indie Artist NY Charts, and stayed there for 16 weeks, with over 150,000 plays. He has been compared to Michael Jackson, Sade, Maxwell, and India.Arie. Logo Magazine describes his voice as "Honeyed, Subdued and unadorned combination of Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye" while Joel Dunham - CD Reviews says "a Mastery of falsetto like that of Prince"⦠no wonder people everywhere are grooving and relaxing to this new sound.
Nhojj started singing as a child in Guyana; where he performed in churches, on radio programs and eventually for the president. At 18, he moved to New York City where he, after graduating from NYU with a B.A. in Economics, returned to his true calling - music.
His '01 debut, "I've Been Waiting for You," a quiet, raw emotional musical exploration, prompted writer Chris Van Loan - Music Dish to suggest "Blessed with Musical Genius". Music from the CD was featured at the 2002 International Fringe Festival in the Award-winning play - "The Making of the Black Man."
His '03 sophomore, "Someday Peace, Love and Freedom" a reggae-inspired conversation on politics, religion and social injustice, won the Best Male Performance at the Fresh Fruit Festival, and garnering the Best Male Recording Nomination at the '04 Outmusic Awards. In support of the project, he completed a 10-city College Tour, filmed an unplugged DVD performance with Emmy Nominated Director Bill Cote, and opened for Def Jam Poet Stacey Ann Chin and Motown Recording artist Donnie.
Giving back has always been important to Nhojj. To date he's given free concerts to support the causes and organizations near to his heart - Lifebeat: Hearts and Voices program, Hiroshima-Nagasaki Commemoration Services, 911 Concerts, YWCA, Theaters Against War, Earth Day Celebrations, the Powel Street Addiction Center, and co-produced the "Underground to Peace and Unity Concert." Music from the "Underground to Peace and Unity Concert" aired on Public, College and Internet Radio around the world.
In '05 Nhojj re-visited his Gospel roots, recording "Coming Home" and completing a 5 month, 26-city, 41 Church tour that took him to cites throughout USA, England, Canada, and the Caribbean. That year he also had the opportunity to perform at the Avery Fischer Hall at Lincoln Center with Altino Concert Choral. The only original composition on the CD "A Song for Mother;" received honorable mention at the 13th Annual Billboard Song Contest.
To date, on the Myspace NY Indie Artist Charts, Nhojj has seen music from his 3 CDs peak at:
