Suzanne's Bio
Sheâs tiny, like one of those whirlwinds in the west Texas desertâ¦once stirring up only a small cloud of dust but surely destined to become a tornado. Soon, everyone in her path will be caught up in the whirlwind of the little lady from Houston with the big voiceâSuzanne Karr.
Her first memory of music is standing on the coffee table singing âRhinestone Cowboy.â Following the influences of other small dynamos like Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton and Patsy Cline, Suzanne has branched out from these traditional roots to a more contemporary sound that is all her own. She has fronted some of the best contemporary cover bands from Texas to Tennessee and spent countless hours in recording studios and on the stage.
From 1998 to 2002 she was the dynamic lead vocalist for one of Texasâ best-known touring bands, The Emotions. Her energetic stage presence and booming voice won her thousands of fans, both young and old alike. She began traveling to Nashville and writing songs in 1999 and moved to Nashville in 2002. Since then, she has worked on her craft and is proud of her evolution as a songwriter and an artist.
She has a gift. She is moved by the stories and people she sings about and she can move her listeners as well. Her songs tell a great deal about her view of the world and about her place in it. Though extremely talented, Suzanne is anything but the stereotypical artist. Her unassuming style and affecting personality make her a favorite to work with. She is bright and funny and her humor is both infectious and engaging.
In short, Suzanne is a rare combination of Texas beauty, unlimited potential and magnetic personality. Everywhere she goes, in every town she passes through, even the strongest trees bend just a little. Find a quiet place, grab a handrail and hold on.
A tornadoâs cominââ¦.
Suzanne Karr Album Review December 2007
From the opening measure of Suzanne Karrâs self titled debut, itâs obvious: the stories weâve heard about this girl are all true. For years, Karr has lived mostly in legend as the tiny Texas girl with an all-world voice. She has been a regular on the Nashville scene for several years, writing and working and preparing for what has turned out to be a terrific listen.
This CD is filled to the brim with hook-laden melodies. From the Phil Vassar-penned âIâm Already Goneâ to her cover of Paul Carrackâs âDonât Shed a Tearâ, this major label sounding recording impresses and inspires, etching the tunes on the listenerâs memory. After just one listen, I found myself humming the most memorable of these for days. Great pop recordings should do that, and this one definitely delivers.
The jewel, though, on this record is the touching âI Ainât Made That Wayâ a melodic and beautiful confessional of a woman who has grown weary of her hum-drum life. She daydreams about running away, but instead responds to her better angels and stays to do the right thing. Karr co-wrote this clever tale that, at least lyrically, completely defies the country songwriting formula.
It is Karrâs best performance among many very good ones. It is hard not to wonder how with all of the pap that fills the country radio airwaves, it has taken so long for Suzanne Karr to break through to become a star of the highest magnitude. One can only hope that this well-produced and powerful debut changes all of that, and finally introduces this fine singer/songwriter to the world.
