About âLow-down, No-goodâ
The title track, âLow-down, No-good, Downright Nasty Bluesâ, was inspired by the song âMan of Constant Sorrowâ as featured in the Coen Brothers movie, O Brother, Where Art Thou?. I sought to capture the same type of mournfulness, allude to the music of the Deep South, and give it a period âhard timesâ feel. Since the movie that inspired me took place in the Depression, I researched photos of people from the period, and took note of their clothing and surroundings. Once I chose the title track, I went with the period theme for the photo shoot. I think it was very effective, in the end.
However, it is but one mood of eight on the CD; I donât want you to think that the cover represents the style of music for the entire disc. Nor does it represent an untoward fondness for overalls!
About Bill Prouten
Bill Prouten is now into his sixth year as Woodwind Instructor at Keyano College, in Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada. He has been the Director of the Keyano Jazz Festival, since 2003.
He holds a Masters Degree in Jazz Performance from the University of Southern California, a Bachelor of Music from McGill, and a Diploma in Jazz Studies from St. Francis Xavier University.
Bill worked as a freelance musician and composer in Winnipeg, Montreal, Los Angeles, and Vancouver prior to moving to Fort McMurray in August of 2002. He has twice been a member of Saxology Canada, a sax quartet based out of Winnipeg, and has written and arranged for that group.
His new cd, Low-down, No-good⦠is his first release, and a good introduction to his style of jazz. Please take some time and have a listen online. Then buy a copy for all your friends; they make great stocking stuffers!
