UNIVERSITY TIMES

The Drool Brothers are actually real brothers who have little in common with the electronic acts that currently coin themselves as brothers. Tom, whose main instrument is the bass guitar, and Chuck, whose main instrument is the drums, have been an active part of Los Angeles's music culture for quite awhile. Individually and collaboratively, Chuck and Tom have worked with the elite of L.A.'s underground such as Jamie James and the Kingbees, Kristian Hoffman, Cult of One, Texas Terri, Harry Dean Stanton, Jigsaw Seen, Pete Seger, Earl Mankey, Ruben and the Jets, Killer Crows and many others. Once their sibling rivalry waned around the mid 80's, they decided to meet regularly and practice the grooves of James Brown, Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band, P-Funk and other soul heroes. Unfortunately, the grooves were rather difficult to play, and every once in a while, Tom or Chuck would drool on their instrument, either leaving a puddle of spit on the snare drum head or a loogy hanging precariously from a bass pick up. Thus, the name "Drool Brothers" was conceived.

Chuck eventually purchased a Fostex X-15 4 track recorder and the brothers saw an open canvass in which to explore and document their complex, yet goofy sense of reality and fantasy The Drool Brothers eventually sought refuge from the pretentious Los Angeles club circuit within their womb-like haunted garage located on the eastside of Los Angeles, which Tom proudly named "Hana Lee Studios." It is there where their semi-stream of consciousness funk epic, "THE DROOL BROTHERS" was created and recorded. They borrow aesthetically from the Ohio Players, Frank Zappa, James Brown, Jerry Lewis (French Genius), John Cage and various 60's garage bands to create what the University Times described as "a sound all their own." Their funk-based grooves are layered with sitar, bongos, farfisa organ, fuzz guitar, awkward lyrics, disco wah wah, funky clavs and various noises that they mistakenly invent. They sing about nothing really, masking tape, sex, job interviews and janitors.

Their first single entitled "Halloweenish," includes the psychedelic disco mix that was played on over 200 college and public supported radio stations throughout the world. A limited edition orange vinyl copy is availble through their web-site. Check it out!!
