Details:
Doug Barber is a singer/songwriter from the Philadelphia suburbs. For years, Doug has taught in the public school music classroom, giving some of the finest jazz musicians on the Philadelphia and New York scene their first steps into the musical world. Now, into his second year as an acoustic performer, Doug has put 11 of his own fine compositions onto a full length CD,âA Warm Place To Beâ. The CD moves between solo acoustic tracks, and tracks that feature other fine musicians, such as jazz vibraphonist Mike Pinto and local harmonica legend, Bob Beach. With thought provoking material such as the meditation on forgiveness, âThe Amish Schoolhouseâ, the heart wrenching statement on teen suicide, âOne More or Lessâ, and the title track âA Warm Place To Beâ, Dougâs music hits itâs mark with the intelligent singer/songwriter audience. But the disc is also balanced with romps like the hilarious rip on American Idol âBeautiful Mistakesâ, the uplifting 5/4 twang of âFear of Heightsâ and the wistful love song, âOld Graveyardsâ.
Dougâs live shows are done solo with just acoustic guitar and vocal. Although a two hour set of his own originals is satisfying, Doug mixes in songs that he puts his own spin on, by some of his favorite songwriters such as John Hiatt, Steve Forbert, Lyle Lovett, and of course fellow home stater, Bruce Springsteen.
Susan Miller of the Central Record had the following to say in a newspaper feature:
Much like the man himself, his voice is nice â raspy yet tuneful, robust yet sweet, edgy yet earnest. It's a good voice â but the lyrics of his own songs â now that's where the real beauty of Doug Barber's music lies.
No simple light-hearted fare, these tunes; they're meaty and satisfying and chockfull of really poignant insights on topics from sneaking off on a picture perfect day to catch Opening Day of baseball to the tragedy of the murders of the little girls at the Amish Schoolhouse. ("A barn-raising in reverse" he calls the community's gathering to dismantle the schoolhouse where the tragedy took place.)
