Details:
Kip McAtee plays solo guitar weekly at the Red Elephant Café in Honolulu, Hawaii. He is also currently a member of the âPartners In Timeâ band, which plays music from Bulgaria, Greece, Turkey, and Armenia. He was a member of âThe Balkan Noyz Boyzâ in the bay area, and toured the country with the remarkable jazz singer, Deborah Brown. Prior to that, he was a member of a long list of garage bands in the Seattle area, including âThe Fabulous Fenderskirtsâ and âMotherâs Milkâ.
âJolantaâ is a pretty faithful rendition of the Calypsoâish tune by Earl Klugh. I heard Earl play in the early 70s in Seattle with George Benson. He played a flashy rendition of âTwinkle, Twinkle, Little Starâ in harmonics, and Iâve been a fan ever since.
âWaltz For Debbieâ was borrowed loosely from John Knowles terrific arrangement in the âFingerstyle Quarterlyâ. The lyrics to this Bill Evans standard are very touching, and I always try to think of the words when I play the head to this tune.
âSlip Into Springâ is from âRiverdance, The Showâ. It is written in 9/8. See if you can count the nine. âPartners In Timeâ plays several of Bill Whelanâs tunes, which are often Irish melodies with Balkan time signatures.
âSomeday My Prince Will Comeâ is the familiar Disney standard played in a guitar friendly, cowboy key.
âCarinosoâ is a Laurindo Almeda arrangement of the famous Brazilian Choro.
âI Could Write A Bookâ is the Rogers and Hart standard. Since recording it, Iâve worked in a quote to âBlue Moonâ in the blowing section.
âCaptain Caribeâ is a Dave Grusin tune from Earl Klughâs âLiving Inside Your Loveâ album. I remember hearing Lee Ritenour play this at the âBaked Potatoeâ in LA, and it stuck with me.
âPinkeolâ is an Armenian folk song that I learned from the incomparable clarinetist, Souren Baronian.
âSummer Strutâ is the Spyro Gyra hit. I was happily surprised I was able to cover this as a solo guitar piece. The coda makes a nice blowing section.
âAdiosâ is one of those catchy melodies that will sound instantly familiar. I heard the great solo guitarist, Jeff Linsky play this and managed to learn it. Iâve worked out a lot of Jeffâs terrific arrangements.
âJust Friendsâ is the jazz standard. I like to play it because of the whole tone scale.
âBesame Muchoâ is the most popular tune I play on my solo gig. Itâs another one of those catchy melodies that everybody seems to love.
âSukiyakiâ caught my ear when I heard it on the radio this summer. The title was totally different in Japanese. I love this quote from the Wikipedia: âthe re-titling was like issuing "Moon River" in Japan under the title "Beef Stewââ.
âWhen She Loved Meâ is the Randy Newman song from âToy Storyâ. Again, I always try to think of the lyrics when I play this song.
âTakinâ It To The Streetsâ is the Michael McDonald hit. I heard him on âAustin City Limitsâ and thought, âIâd love to play in that bandâ. Everybodyâs singing, and as Chicago once said, âeverybodyâs workingâ.
âTentativeâ is the latest in a long list of tunes Iâve written in the Armenian 10/8 time signiture with âtenâ in the title.
