From 1976 to the present, I have been writing songs and original compositions. My family was musical in nature and we were well known for our sing alongs over the holiday seasons. With that Southern Baptist flavor and encouragement from my parents and siblings I went from a brass (trumpet, trombone) player in high school to a blues guitar player in my senior year.
The inspiration to become a polyphonic player came from live public television shows in the Chicago area including: Doctor John, Johnny Winter, Lightning Hopkins, John Lee Hooker, Gordon Lightfoot, and many others in the summers of 1973-75. I laid down the horn and began a guitar journey that has never ended.
My first song was "Driving the Road to Mexico", I wrote it in my grandmotherâs trailer in Mineral Wells Texas, after a long drive from Albuquerque. When the effects of the Green Lizard Vodka had worn off I sat down with uncle Wilburnâs arch top and put my first song down on paper.
That song and four others made there way to the Library of Congress, December 21, 1982 in âJohn D. Stoneâs First Collection of Western Rockâ. (a genre I would coin) I began writing songs and copywriting them every year until I finished my recording sessions in 1991.
My engineer and fellow arranger was Tim Kinsella, brilliant and exceptionally gifted he helped me to find the combinations each song deserved. Bryant Jones incandescent piano, Luanne Scarboroughâs blues voice and lots of myself and Tim filling the sessions to the fullest on an analog eight track tape recorder.
I have waited for the technology to become âmodernâ and re-master these songs. The linear analog sound is under each track but the post production is in the modern digital realm. Jack Kennedy and I pulled the reel to reel out and I spent two months re-mastering. I still love analog and hope you will enjoy these songs the way we recorded them.
With the album "Natural Mystic", also in my catalog, you will find my work moving into an experimental rock vibe with much more production.
The songs:
Rely On Me...when someone is lonely this is a nice way to say I love You.
Do the Boogaloo...you know what I mean when I say "Boogaloo"...
Like No Other...love is like this...
Days Go By...my tribute to John Lennon and his short life.
Falling Like An Eagle...I was falling fast after this one..
I Love You...sometimes we need to repeat what we believe..
Surrogate Lover...we all want the real love, don't we?
New Happy Trails...divorce can be hard...
Driving the Road To Mexico...the first song I wrote and the sound of the west Texas wind at the end...
I wouldn't be here today without the help and musical friends I have encountered, this album is part of their lives too. I wouldn't have written "Abra La Puerta", my current state of being, without all of the music you review here today.
Peace to you and come visit me, the more you listen the more I write...
I believe that each song embodies my life and times please enjoy them! Namaste...
